Elk during rut season - Should I be concerned?

I'm thinking about taking a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park in a few weeks and it will likely be the beginning of the elk rut season.

Do I need to be concerned? What do you recommend?

At the least, be aware of any game trails near your camp. The park has way too many elk; no predation.

Moose and Caribou are very dangerous (the males) during rutting season, so I imagine Elk might be (some deer are too).

They are big, stupid, easily angered (they think anything is a challenge for a mate), and relentless. This makes for a bad combination.

Hang very high, or go someplace else.

    I play go.
Of course I sleep in a hammock!

Just don't spray your self or your gear with elk estrus and you will be fine

Couldn't say for sure, but according to hiker_dc, you'll probably need a set of these.

You should be aware, but not overly concerned.

Elk, during the rut, usually congregate in large open areas like meadows during the night time to *err* make little elk. Bugling as a young elk can enrage a lager bull elk but I have never heard of anyone being attacked. Enjoy the sights and the sounds of collecting elk if you are lucky enough and don't worry. You'll be fine.

Having spent my life chasing after the elusive elk in all seasons, believe me unless your snoring sounds exactly like an elk buggle, you are fine.

If you happen to hang near a crowd that is a bit noisy, just chunk some of it over there and watch the show!
