    How to make ripstop waterproof?

Just scored several yards of ripstop from wally's $1 bin in Cullman, Al ... Measured the dimensions and the weight, did the math, ~ 1.09 oz/yd. Planned to use it for a tarp... but... it fails the water test.

So... Can you DIY to make ripstop into sil? If not, can you add reliable waterproofing for less $ than it would cost to just buy sil from Ed? I don't want to waste time making a leaky tarp! But I also don't like the thought that I just blew 10 bucks on fabric that I probably won't use up anytime soon. I can make a few things, but 30'?

But, its 1.1 oz. Unless you're making it for a munchkin, I would not trust it to hold much weight. Especially my 200 lbs.

I will use some for a quilt, but I really want a tarp.

do you know where the rip started from, the edge or in the middle of hammock? ..... I have been using velcro closures for the double hull hammock that is made from 1.1 and it runs full length of the edge of the hammock and into the whipping. The hammock is top loading so the edge with the velcro is the side I get in from and gives the outer edge more strength.

The last one I built as a single hull hammock and sewed a one inch poly strap the full length and into the whipping on the edge I will be getting in the hammock from. I sew the bug net to the opposite side and zipper on the re inforced side, so the main edge strain is always on that side...

Has anybody tried a waterproofing product with good success?

Could I just mix up a big batch of silicon and white gas and shove the fabric in? Would that make it sil? or a bomb?

there are 2 more pictures in my gallery.
having tied the ends w/ knots probably didn't help for one thing. also it was an unknown, non-ripstop fabric (nylon?) from the $1.00 bin.
it sure was comfy... & light (about 7 ozs before adding supports if i remember correctly).

Gulp.... that does look like a quick trip to ground. The stuff I have is rip stop but is pretty thin. AS you say it sure is comfortable and light. I guess the extra stretch making it conform better makes it comfy. Hard to say from the pic where it let go first.
