First Annual Florida Hang (a monster event in the making....)

There it is gang! Our winters are warm even though our wildlife can kill you. No, I mean it, all of our wildlife can kill you--even our squirrels hunt in packs like piranhas! But even so--in a few thread the idea for a wintertime Florida Hang for locals and interested northerners (you are all northerners from our vantage point) has emerged. How does it sound? Where shall we all meet? When shall we meet there? Let the planning begin on three. One, two, three---Go!

I would think Central Florida-ish? I am a Jacksonville guy myself. I am just getting into the outdoors, but from what I understand there are not a ton of places to recreate in the old NFLA region. Are we talking a site specific car hang, a hiking from A to B hang, or a state park "you are not allowed to hang here unless you do covert operations" hang?

I'm in as long as it is in winter. I'm from south Florida but I believe most of the nicest hiking areas are in the north-central part of the state.

    Future Florida Hanger

New to Hammocks, Not so new to general tent camping.
I've been reading the forum for a number of months now. Just ordered a WBBB.
If it arrives in time for the hangout event, I'd like to show up and show you what a nubie hanger looks like. Coming UP from Ft Myers area.

    Hi Islander,

I'm still working out the wrinkles in my hammock, too. But I can share my mistakes with you!

I'd like to see and hear all about it. Me, Still scoping close areas where I live to hang without interuptions or hassle. But not wanting to drive an hour to get there either.
At least not for working with a new hammock setup. I may try a first hang in the Palmdale - Fisheatingcreek area. Lots of woods, fewer people, and just some peace and quiet figuring it out.

Got any favorite South Florida Hammock Hanging areas?

One of the nicest parks in Florida is the Everglades National Park and it's one of the most over looked.
What is left of Florida's birds group down there, it's a beautiful place but be prepared the mosquitoes can be bad, but again if you’re ready for them their no problem.
Lots of trails to hike and places to camp, one very large camp area facing Florida bay.
In Winter it's very nice a good cold snap will knock the bugs down

    Of course, count me in.

I might suggest: The Suwannee River section of the Florida trail that I just completed near White Springs (see my trip report). What would make it cool is folks who aren't into a longish hike can canoe along. There is a historic hotel in White springs that might be interesting to crash for a night. It's a turn-of-the-century spa/hotel that was once a getaway for the wealthy who wanted to experience the medicinal effects of the spring. Also; might be fun to schedule it to coinside with a music fesival weekend at the Spirit of the Suwannee park - I understand that the music festivals there are a 24 hour/day good time (they do have primitive camping (for hammocks), regular campsites and cabin accomodation too). I suspect spouses, family and girlfriends will be interested in going to FL this winter even if they don't want to hike or hammock.

The FL Greenway is also a great option (other trip report).

I'm up for any of the other suggestions as well.

It's the Marjorie Harris Carr - Cross FL Greenway - There are several trailheads along the way and also several "real" campgrounds. You can camp anywhere in the Greenway with a permit (free, just apply).
