    Zpacks Cuben Hammock Tarp

Anyone ordered one of these yet?

Coverage is larger than the others currently on the market. Price ($230) is fair, and the weight (5.6 ounces) is phenomenal.

    Thanks!

Sheesh, every time I turn around someone has to post something else I'm going to want to try. I was on the site configuring a pack and never saw this... Nice find

One thing I did notice was this "(wall tie outs, catenary ridge line as shown are extra)" Not much extra but adds to the cost.

I hope someone has some real experience with this tarp. The weight would be perfect to go with my WBBB 1.0 for summer.

Yikes! that tarp really looks nice! And, the price seems resonable for what you get. Joe has an excellent reputation for his Zpacks over on the BPL forum.

For hammocks, I think the catenary ridge line is a good idea as well as the mid side tie-outs as shown in the picture.

**** This thing is definitely on my wish list! * ***
I can actually cut my tarp weight in half from my MacCat Ultra Spinn and still have ample coverage!

My only question is, "Do the edges have a catenary cut?"

I have the panel pull outs on my OES tarp and find they were a good option to put on also.

I'm not sure on the cat cut ridgeline as it states that it would limit you to an A frame setup. Would this stop you from using it in a diamond pitch with a Hammock?

I was thinking along the same lines, I have a MacCat Deluxe in Sil and need a second tarp for my light weight kit

It doesn't look like the edges are cat cut and now I see that it's not seam sealed either

The more I look into the zpacks hex hammock tarp, I realize that it is sewn. I have read in several places that cuben tarps that are sewn, always fail at the stitches. Whereas, bonded or taped seams are stronger than the cuben fiber itself.

I wonder if Joe would consider a taped version?

I have one of joe's packs and the failure areas are along the stitching. Let me explain

The pack is rated at 20 lb max, ok maybe up to 30 for very short periods, but generally 20 lb. with a base wt in the 8-10 range. Unfortunately I overloaded the pack with 43 lb, mostly water, for a 4 day desert hike. At the end of the trip the pack was fine but the mylar was starting to separate along the sewn lines. the spectra fibers held fine and there were never any tears or actual seam failures, but there were gaps in the mylar. I still use the pack without problems and have ordered another that I plan to not overload, still the failure was at the sewn seams for what that is worth.

Now I realize we are talking about a tarp and the forces would be significantly different. Just sayin'....

Bottom line, Still love the pack and even though I totally abused it, it still works fine, patched up with a little mylar tape and good to go, but gaps at the stitched areas show some of the limits of sewn cuben.

Maybe it's a Hennessy and Dis enters from bottom -- which is why it's hung higher.
