a bed sheet hammock?

I've seen some references on the net to making a hammock from a bed sheet - has anyone tried that? would be strong enough?

If so, then could you make a hammock with a pad pocket by taking a king size sheet (120 x 90), folding it in half then making wipping the hammock by folding in half again and gathring it up? When you opened it up, there would be two layers of matrial which would be opened on one side of the hammock.

Now I'm thinking, if you can make a hammock from a bed sheet, then perhaps there is some sort of quilted bed spread that you could use to make an insulated hammock.

I think it would be wide enough, but would it be long enough? the longer the hammock, the flatter the curve...
I suppose you could go more on the diagonal, to use up the width.
Then there is the "Cotton Problem" if it gets damp, it stays damp. not a bad thing in the summer/warmer zones, but needful of consideration for trail usage. Still and all, a cool idea for a quick test hammock!

you could use satin sheets,lol! Might be stronger using the higher thread count sheets.

I wonder if a 100% polyster blanket might work for a "winter hammock"?

or how about this: a alternative down blanket - it is 100% polyster - i wonder if it can be waterproofed with silicon spray - and it measures 110 inches by 90 so it would be long enough. On sale for $30 at JCPenny

I have made several hammocks using bed sheet material. It's cheap so therefore perfect for experiments. Yes, folding it in half creates a nice little pocket that you could use for pads. Just one piece of advice: hem the edges, hem the edges, hem the edges. If not, it will rip right at the whipping and dump you square on your backside. I have the tshirt.

Thanks for the advice - i would think that the edges of most sheets are already hemmed, but if they are not, how much of a hem do you need? one that extends below the whipping?

I was not using actual bed sheets, just the same material. So I started with raw edges all the way around. I playing with mega-sized hammocks so prefab bed sheets wouldn't have been big enough. I ran a hem down every length.

I once got stuck on a really crowded overnight train from Munich to Florence. Since there was almost nowhere to sit and definitely nowhere to sleep, I tied the ends of a bedsheet to the overhead luggage rack with some rope and made a field expedient hammock. It wasn't comfortable, but it beat standing all night. The linen was string enough, though; if I had better conditions in which to hang, I bet I could've got a reasonably comfortable.

I've seen that video before - I thought he was using a theater curtin - in any event he makes tying overhand knots look complicated and requiring a dislocatable shoulder joint
