I have to start off by saying what a beautiful area this is and thanks to Happy Camper for putting this hang together.Met some mighty nice folks, hope to see them all again.Iknow I will be returning to Dolly Sods.I got to the Wildlife Trailhead off FR75 about 1830hrs on Thurs. in a mist,Hiked down just over a mile to a nice 2 acre field and made camp in the woodl line just in time for the sky to open up to the first of several downpours and thunder thru the night.Next morning I headed on down and went North on the Rohrbaugh trail to come back up to the road on the Fisher Spring Run trail but somehow missed that trailhead.Being one that hates to backtrack especially when it involves hiking uphill,I proceeded on an old logging road(Readers Digest version starts now)that lead to 3hrs. of bushwhacking and 2 miles of walking down the road back to the car.Proceeded to meet up with the group and some clear blue sky.Had a lovely meet & eat, slept thru the Boy Scouts that were drowning out the coyotes(slightly embelished).Next morning we moseyed on over to Blackbird Knob, set up camp, and a few of us hiked down Red Creek trail to where 2 creeks meet and back.Repeated the night,Thing 1 kept us all in the glow of a nice fire for the second night.Coyotes didn't have any Boy Scouts to compete with this night!Sun. morn we all kind of left in small groups.I drove down to the Senaca Rock Visitor Center and got a map to the Spruce Knob/Senaca Creek area and hiked down Senaca Creek Trail off 112 up the Swallow Rock trail for a camp and returned Mon. on the Allegheny Mnt. trail & Tom Lick trail.Again a nice area, great views from Spruce Knob.Lollygagged on home,Picknicking at Goshen Pass in Va.on Hwy 39,back to the poor house.

It was Red Creek water that drove me to get a Steripen and abandon filters entirely.

What do you do about crud (floaties) in the water with a steri-pen? Strain it or anything?

I'm told some people use prefilters. I've used a canibalized fabric prefilter from a "Safewater Anywhere Filter System" that I got in the blind auction at a Hot Springs hang, but on my last trip I simply strained water through a bandana. That seemed to work pretty well. I guess the idea is not to have any solid particles that the bugs can hide behind when you're zapping them with UV light. (My hiking buddy complained about the UV taste to the water. He would have done better to worry about which part of the bandana I used.)

Hey gang, remember that killer salad Lisa brought to the DS hang. Here's the recipe!

    South Western Cornbread Salad

    1 (6-oz.)package Mexican cornbread mix
    1(0.4-oz.)envelope buttermilk Ranch dressing mix
    1 small head romaine lettuce,shredded(about 6 cups)
    2 large tomatoes,chopped(about 4 cups)
    1(15-oz.)can black beans,rinsed and drained
    1 cup grilled corn kernels(about 2 to 3 ears)
    1(8-oz.)package shredded Mexican four-cheese blend
    6 bacon slices,cooked and crumbled
    5 green onions,chopped(about i cup)

Prepare cornbread mix according to package directions, cool 15 minutes.Crumble cornbread.Prepare dressing mix according to package directions.

Layer half each of cornbread, lettuce, dressing, tomatoes, and next 5 ingredients in a large 4-quart bowl or trifle dish.Repeat layering once.Cover and chill 2 to 24 hours.

1(15- oz.)can whole kernel corn with red and green peppers, drained, may be subsituted)

To make it a main dish, add chopped cooked chicken or shredded barbecued pork.

Thanks bunches, Lisa. (FYI, she's bringing it to Oct. MAHHA!) This is going to my next work potluck.
