You're a stand up guy PoppaBear, sharing your 'humbling' experience to help educate the rest of us. The hammock stands always make me a little nervous with that metal bar directly below the tailbone/ backbone. I've debated looking for some sort of foam pipe insulation or something that could be used for padding. I think I'll now follow thru on finding something.
Thanks for sharing - hope you heal quickly.

I have a thick, memory foam type pillow laying on the floor beneath my hammock in the bed room. It's always there. It's been there for several years
I put it in a dust mite proof case 1st, then a regular pillow case to keep it clean.
And yeah, hammock stands w/ a bar down the center concern me too
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Poppabear, I'm coupling your story with mine of a week ago and will from now on make a decided effort in what I hang over. For a long time I've only spotted the trees and the lay of the land but not really the Lay Of The Land beneath me-taking it for granted that all would work. At the very minimum dress up the potential landing zone in case the pilot announces 'we're going down'. Thanks for sharing the account.

Poppabear - Thanks for sharing and hope you heal up soon. A broken tail bone can haunt you for a long time.

I've said it before, NO KNOTS IN AMSTEEL.
    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=12569

In addition to being slippery, so knots unwind, amsteel is weak in compression so knots weaken it much more than they do nylon rope.

    Be safe out there people.

I have always had much anxiety over the center bar on my Vario stand. That's what I miss about my old home made wooden stand, wide open in the middle. Bad enough to fall on the smooth ground. Falling on that center bar would be misery multiplied several times. I always have a pad under me, but I don't feel like it is enough, I need a thicker one.

Sorry about your injury, it sounds bad!

I like to hang from trees just big enough to do the job, and as close to the ground as possible.

Knotty... can you explain what "weak in compression" means?

Poppabear, that was a very good telling of what happened to you. I'm glad you only ended up with awful bruises and nothing broken.

I too found out that amsteel will not hold a knot but I was lucky because I'd put a stopper knot at the end of my rope. I had a bowline slip and until then, I flat just would not have believed that the bowline knot could even move. Never say never!! After that, I started learning how to splice and make whoopies with my amsteel.

Sorry to hear of your accident and hope it never repeats.

We do enough experimenting on suspension systems and hammocks that we just know we'll hit the floor sometimes. It's bad enough coming down on a hard floor, but to hit a raised bar which concentrates the force is much, much, much worse.

That bar down the center of the hammock stand is one thing that TeeDee worked hard to eliminate on our stand in the basement. We now have foam under the hammock in the base lab at all times just so that we don't forget or get lazy when it's just going to be a "simple change". Hitting the hard floor once was enough.

Basically high modulus lines like amsteel don't like to be crushed. In simple terms, crushing part of the line under another part is how many knots work. HM line is a very different animal than traditional nylon, polypropylene, etc. Fortunately much of the pain in learning has already been suffered by the sailing world. We just need to learn from their failures.

A splice sqeezes more than crushes so amsteel works great with splices.

Wow that was pretty bad a fall! I hope the back and butt is feeling better.. Amsteel's pretty slippery and leaving almost no running end is a no go on any knots period.. I'm not sure of the exact rule of thumb but in all my knotworks for climbing and repelling, I was taught to leave a minimum of 6 inches of line at the free end AFTER securing a knot with a couple of half hitches.. Of course before any load bearing usage, it's always a good habit to check and recheck all the knots also for wear.
