    Talking BSA Camporee

I have been hanging with my HH for a summer now and lurking on the HF for most of that time. I put together a lot of the ideas and finally got a chance to try them in the wild.

The Mountain Valley District of the Montana Council had their fall camporee over the weekend. It was held in a field, so hanging from trees was not an option (each troop has a specific area to setup in).

I had justed swapped out the suspension on the HH with dyneema whoopie slings. I then made whoopie slings for the risers and top spanners of my tensegrity stand. Oh Man is making whoopie slings addictive. I found that folding about 16 guage insulated wire works great for pulling the lines.

I used 1.25 flexible conduit for the poles and dyneema for all runners. I used a ratcheting tie-down to apply tension to the structure. I used soft shackles for attaching the suspension to the stand (did I mention that dyneema is addicting?).

Overall, I slept great for the two nights. It got down to 33 and 31 degrees the two nights. I will need to start working on an underquilt if I plan on using it farther into fall and winter.

Very nice. We've got a large camporee event next month and I suspect I'll be away from the trees also.

Do you have some close up pics of the tendon attachments?

I didn't take any (thought of it afterwards). I just used the gated o-shaped cable connectors from Ace Hardware - the ones rated at 660 lbs closed. I drilled holes about 5/8 (matche inside width of connector) from the end of the conduit and hooked the connector in. This gave a smooth rounded spot to hook the dyneema without cutting it.

By way of disclaimer, I should have mentioned that this was not my idea. I am just one of the intrigued. This is covered in detail in this thread - http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=20209.

I am working on some collapsible/longer poles and when I have them I will try to work up a detailed "How To..." for it.

Awesome! This is encouraging me to do something similar. Thanks for the tips. Photos and measurements of the components would be great.

Also, did you need to stake down any of the sides? More info please!

I'll try to include measurements for it in when I get v2 up.

Yes, I stake down the post directly opposite the hammock. In this case, I attached to the post from the fence we were along.

PGSoft, I'm also a Scouter and run into the problem of treeless zones at camporees in the National Capital Area Council, so I'm keenly interested in your solution. No trees at Assateague Island, where we family camp.

I like the idea of collapsible poles. The 2"x4"x8' designs I've seen are more length and mass than I wish to carry on my Subaru Legacy wagon.

    Thanks for posting.
