Prusik vs. Auto Block (Klemheist) on Continuous Ridgeline

I was making a continuous ridgeline last night using masons line and was wondering weather the prusik had any advantages over the auto block or vice-versa for use as the auto-adjustment loops on the ridgeline. It seems to me that the auto block grips better and holds the load as well as the prusik would, but I have not done any field test to support this. Does anyone have any thoughts or insight on this? Thanks

i believe, but i'm not a knot guy, that technically an auto-block requires a carabiner, while the klemheist (or kleimheist) is tied only with a loop of line. The klemheist is directional, and must be tied so the pull is directed back across the loops, while the prussic can be loaded in either direction. However, i think the klemheist is a little easier to tie, especially for those of us who are fat fingered...

A standard prusik performs best when it's loaded perpendicular to the main line. (In this case, your ridgeline.)

A klemheist is intended to be loaded in parallel with the main line, will grip when loaded, and can slide when unloaded.

An autoblock is a variation of the klemheist that will also slide when lightly loaded. (If you know this knot, you probably know it's used in rappelling as a backup.)

I use the klemheist a lot, to me the autoblock adds more fussiness than I prefer.

I am not sure if it needs a carabiner as I am not a knot guy either, but it will have some type of attachment on it to clip to the tarp. And it would be opposite knots on the line to compensate for the directional pull on either side of the tarp

Root - I had intended on using the Klemheist since I wasnt going to be attaching a biner to the loops but instead adding a mitten hook type clip to the pull through loop like this:

    Hi there

I had a similar question last week. Here are some of the responses from that thread.

I'm using the Klemheist with five wraps on mason line.

(I may upgrade to zing-it at some point as it stretches less, but the mason line does not lose much tautness overnight and the price is right

On a recent trip I found my prusiks slipping because the load was more parallel to the ridgeline. Switched to the klemheist and it worked great. The klemheist was also a bit easier to do.

I appreciate all the answers. It appears that Klemheist is the way to go. Thanks again
