There are several techniques for baffles. A "box" baffle is often accomplished with strips of netting that form square type tubes in the inside of the quilt. Mega-cold temps can be dealt with this way. You can cram a whole lot of down in one of those things. The offset baffle is somewhat as you have drawn it. The math can get rather tricky in figuring out how much netting to use and how wide the baffles should be. The construction is also a bit tricky but not difficult once you get the hang of it. Essentially you are alternating sewing the lines on the top and bottom of the quilt as you build it. it is edge/bottom/top/bottom/top/bottom/.../edge and the edges are bound off. Three season quilts (the three coldest seasons) will often use this technique. The sewn through is the easiest to construct but also the least warm. It is recommended for warm weather quilts only. YMMV. None of this is carved in stone.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

    We're talking nylon here, Rev.

I guess sewing nylon is like changing out the exhaust manifold on a VW bug . . .

i have not made any down stuff yet but have been thinking on it.i was thinking along the same lines you were, stagering the chambers.now i am thinking of doing a boat shaped uq like this.my thinking is an uq hangs so the side baffles would overlap by gravity.i would sew a regular baffle on the bottom for these to rest on.have not worked out how the ends come together.in cold weather the baffles would be on the inside,in warm turn the uq inside out.the baffles would hang away from each other.
this could be sewed from a single piece of nylon for each side,or the baffles could be sewed then sewed to a different piece.i am sure i can biuld this but have not worked out all the details yet.was going to try it with cattail.

Bradley, while your design would work, & looks realy cool I think I see a couple problems.
    1. This design seems more apt to compress the down than standard baffled designs using differential cuts.
    2. Appears that this may use more RSN than regular baffles thereby increasing the weight.

I think it'll work. I have a lot of experience working with these slippery fabrics and though it can be a pain, it's definitely doable. It just takes times to learn how to manage the material. The bummer is that you're adding a lot more material (and thus weight) to the quilt than other methods. Why not use nanoseeum or something rather than RSN?

    Baffle diagram.

Here's a drawing of the various baffle designs (that I know of).

I believe that most of "our" UQ makers are using the box baffles, as designing a UQ with a differential cut using any other layout would be a mathenatical and mechanical challenge.

A simple clarification for a very good diagram. I refer to the "Z" baffle as the "offset baffle". The only reason I bring it up is clarify that different terminology can relate to the same thing.

    and the tubes were staggered
it would have a better insulating value

    Yes / No ???

the biggest problem i would see is you can't get a differential cut...this will hurt it as an UQ...but as a TQ i think it could work
and the work that would need to go into it may be more then it's worth
but i would like to see someone try o make one like this...just to see how it turns out

oh yeah...Pics or it didn't happen
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

That "Z" baffle is an interesting idea. The top, bottom, and middle netting
could all be chalk lined or marked with long parallel lines and the netting sewn in as one sheet. No cutting baffles and would be an easy quick sew.....I like this idea.
