I used to do the back up system back in the day. Then I started to look for ways to lighten my load. Dropped close to 12 lbs. of weight just eliminating backup gear I never used. I may have taken the 2 is 1 a little too far but you get the idea. HYOH.

I carry 2 30" amsteel lines with loops in each end to augment tree straps if needed. I also carry 30 feet of 1.75 zing-it for clothes lines etc.

    Apples to oranges maybe but...

How many experienced hangers here have ever needed or used an in field back up?

In the motorcycle world, good long trip planning has an equipment check close to the departure point. Brakes, tires, battery, and etc that can leave you stranded miles from help. I'll simply do a check of my straps and other essential equipment and if it looks weak, it will get replaced.

I voted NO. But I do, in a way, carry a (as in ONE) tree hugger extension. I use what I call a Pack Leash to tie my pack to a tree when setting up camp (Hang it from the tree is likely a better description). It is made of the same Dynema as the Whoopie slings, so I can use that if one tree is too big around. Havn't used it yet, but I CAN.

As to extra anything else, Nope, No need! I do currently have 2 knives in my pack, but that's just because I am switching knives & have yet to remove the "Old" one.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

The only two backup items I ever carry is socks and water purification tablets. Then again, I don't car camp so it's all on my back ... which ain't as young as it used to be

Agreed, I'm the same way. I carry nothing that is duplicated in my pack except socks. For me, it's wasted space and extra weight that I could do without. But, of course, HYOH.

I voted no. I do however always carry a spare length of amsteel 7/64" w/ wich could rig up an emergency replacement to make it through a trip. The amsteel can also serve other duties so it really isn't extra weight (even though it is super light...).

Besides clothing I always carry two methods of starting a fire, two types of water purification and two very small flashlights. I still use a strap and CC buckle system which is probably the strongest part of my entire rig. The only time I considered bringing extra webbing was in CA where they grow some mighty big trees.

    DynaGlide WS.

Don't carry a back up tree hugger. If showing signs of abrasion wear I would replace the treehug. Figure worse case situation is the loop busting. Do lug along a spare DynaGlide WS. Doubles up as an additional tarp tie out, back up tarp tie out. Almost weightless and packs small.
