Talking Hanging from rocks in Joshua Tree NP

So me and some friends are going to be staying a few nights in JTNP in the middle of October and were planning on hammocking. For each hammock we have two 15ft lengths of climbing webbing and carabiners to clip on for hanging with trees, which is what I normally do, however Joshua Tree is in the desert and we will be hard pressed to find trees. We are going to try and hang from rocks. I have never hung hammocks from rocks before so I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions, tips, articles, etc on hanging with rocks. My initial idea was to get some climbing nuts and using those in the cracks of the rocks, but I dont know how well that will work. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Looking at that idea right now...

This http://www.rei.com/product/767290 looks real promising to me (not worried about weight). What say y'all?

Its been many years since I have camp out there but the trick will be to find rocks the right space apart with cracks you can slip some rock climbing cams, nuts or chocks into. Take plenty of water.

Early rock climbers use to use small rocks or nuts from the hardware store to slip into the cracks in the rocks that they could loop a rope or sling around.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

...yer might be prepared to do what Bond7111 does.

Can't find it just now, but there is someone on the forum who uses webbing to go over a rock or a short tree, and around another rock for an anchor. His suspension includes 45' of extensions on each end.

    Tricams

You could also use high grade nuts use an auger to smooth out the threads on the inside and splice an Amsteel loop onto it put a home made wedge onto it and the hex created a stopper for it, and wedge it into cracks in the rocks.

I once met an old school climber in New Mexico that made all of his tricams, and stopper nuts this way (using climbing grade accessory rope though). Says he saves a TON of money and they are just as safe. *terrifying to me* No way would I climb with the guy, but apparently he's never had a problem.

Had a rack full of home made stuff kinda like this, and climbed solo (BIG SURPRISE!!). He moved along like a sloth, slow smooth and steady up the wall we were top roping. He still beat our fastest climber to the top.

hanging on rocks in j-tree will be tough, the rock isn't very featured. i'm sure you can find spots here and there, but it may be pretty tough to find a place you can all hang together.

Are you going to be smushed against the rock with this method though? OR maybe you can find some overheads and work with them.
