Fall 2010 Lake Jocassee Group Hang

A suggestion was made a couple of weeks ago to have a group hang at Devils Fork State Park on Lake Jocassee in the NW corner of South Carolina.
I checked with the ranger and he said it would not be a problem to hang in the tent camping section. The only stipulation is that you have to hang on the site that you reserve, not necesarily over the tent pad, but you can't just go hanging in the woods anywhere. The rule for tents is max of two per site and they must be on the 12 x 12 tent pad. I would expect the same limit for hammocks.
The cost is $16 per night per site.

I checked the camping reservation site.
    http://southcarolinaparks.reserveame...C&parkId=10371

Here are the openings for a few of the weekends. I looked at Fri- Sun.
There are 20 sites in the Tent Camping Section and 5 more in a different area by themselves.

    Sept. 10-12 - 18 of 20 and 4 of 5 are available
    Sept. 17-19 - 12 of 20 and 0 of 5
    Sept. 22-24 - 0 of 20 and 4 of 5
    Oct. 1-3 - 16 of 20 and 5 of 5
    Oct. 8-10 - 19 of 20 and 2 of 5
    Oct. 15-17 - 18 of 20 and 5 of 5
    Oct. 22-24 - 20 of 20 and 4 of 5
    Oct 29-31 20 of 20 and 5 of 5
    Late October looks pretty promising.

    Questions for canoe and kayakers-
Can it be too cold for you guys?
    How cold is too cold?
How deep into the season would you be interested in something like this?

Just wanted to float this out to check for interest. If we want to do something in the fall, we'll need to pull the trigger pretty quick or the sites will get booked.

I could be interested in bringing my family to this hang pending that there is not a conflict of dates fo us. Right in the middle of gymanstic meet season. Also planning a 5 day trip out on the AT over Labor Day Weekend so I'll that to consider as well. Boating season won't stop me from attending, I'm good with any time.

    I'll keep up with the thread . . .

Muskrat, I feel your pain with the meet season. My son is a level 9 and it pretty much takes over our life at that point. Oh, wait, it has taken over our life at EVERY point. What level is your son/daughter?

I am in VA, but I would make the trip down. I have wanted to visit that area for a LONG time.
We're not lost...the trial is in the wrong place.

I have subscribed to this thread. I am not sure if it would be too cold too paddle or not, but maybe I'll buy a boat by then. Who knows.

    I love Jocassee.

I am definately interested in this trip! I love Jocassee & DF state park is a great place. For anyone that has not been here, the majority of the lake (95%) is undeveloped wilderness held under public trust so there aren't houses and docks etc... along the shore line. The area for tent camping (or hammocks in our case) is really nice and although it is certainly not remote camping, the sites are not super crowded on top of each other. My favorites are sites 7 - 16 which are all real close to the water or actually on the lake front.

My vote is for a date in October.

I like October as well ! Don't have our gymnastics meet schedule yet so I can't commit but October would be my preference.

October sounds good to me, my only concern, is the Linville Hang is in October as well, I can't miss that!
I'm definitely interested though, I bet I can get Running Feather to go, as well.

I may ride up with Muskrat if the scheduling works.
I might be able to bring my canoe for anyone that wants to paddle a bit.
