    HMS Victory

I just got back from business travel in the UK. My birthday was on Friday so I decided to take the day to visit the Royal Navy Museum in Portsmouth. HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's ship at the battle of Trafalgar, is berthed there and I went aboard to check it out. Here are a few pictures of the many officers and crew hammocks aboard ship. I thought you would get a kick out seeing how they HYTOH in the "old days" (1805).

Not bad. And yes, that suspension is quite interesting. Oh, and happy birthday. Wish I had spent mine visiting HMS Victory. Now that would have been a treat indeed.

What a great trip! Did you measure the crew hammock separation? They were supposed to have 14 inches allocated per hammock, which was effectively 28 inches because half the crew was below while the other half was on watch. Your pictures make the crew's hang look a bit roomier!

Tough to lie on the diagonal under those conditions... no insulation other than a blanket to wrap around you... if things got wet, too bad... if your neighbor puked, too bad... at least it didn't rain on the crew!

I didn't measure the separation, but they looked about 6"-8" apart--pretty tight to me. The picture probably exaggerates the separation. I noticed they didn't have any IX UQs on board...:-)

Yeah, but did you notice the officer hammocks had spreader bars but the bars were suspended vertically from the overhead beams? It looks like they had some cord to tie the middle sides to keep you from spilling out! I'm thinking serious banana curve when occupied!!!

Nelson's hammock seem to have side bars.
