What is your typical setup for a 40* night???

    Hey everyone,

I am in the process of getting some gear together for cooler nights hang. We will likely be camping on some 40* nights this fall/winter and was wanting to see how you setup for a temp in that range? Right now I just have two hammocks a HH Safari and Expedition and JRB UQ's for each of them. Where would you guys recommend I go from here? Do I really need to invest in a pad/sleeping bag setup or do most of you just use a sleeping bag with your UQ setup? I am looking at a Big Agnes park series 15* summit bag but don't know if this is adequate or overkill for my application in a hammock?

Sorry for all the questions but I just want to make sure that I buy the gear once and do it right. I don't mind spending a little more as long as I get it right on the first shot. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

for 40 degrees my hammock setup is...

WBBB Dbl 1.7 or my DIY Speer type hammock
My DIY 3 season UQ 4oz of down 2+ inch of loft
    JRB Hudson river
    Maccat Deluxe
stuff sack with my patagonia down sweater in for a pillow
and my J pad (homemade footbox pad)

for anything colder take out my DIY UQ and replace that with my Winters Crowsnest

you have HH hammock and JRB UQ's...i would just get another set of JRB quilts...and you should be set..
or look into a Hammock gear quilt from Adam(Stormcrow) ...either would be a good choice for TQ's
or you can get 3/4 length UQ from Stormcrow and use your JRB quilts as TQ's
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

If you are going to use this stuff for a hammock I would highly suggest getting quilts instead of sleeping bags! They are lighter in weight than a sleeping bag and easier to use/get into than a sleeping bag while in a hammock! You will need under insulation, ie... a pad or the highly recommended underquilt! My set-up is pretty much the same components as Greenlespaul just different manufacturers!!!

40 is warm I use my Montbell #2 (opened like a quilt) & my Leigh's 3 season UQ. I've used this alone down to about freezing. I also have a foam leg pad to add additional leg insulation when needed. I got my UQ late last spring so I haven't pushed it yet. I'll bet I can can get to the 20's with it

HH explorer Deluxe, Supershelter, Coleman Max 20* sleeping bag used as a top quilt. If It's gonna get below 30*, I'll go to a 0* mummy bag.

If you've got the under quilt, you can use a sleeping bag opened up as a quilt. Not as convienent as a quilt but will work. Just watch it with the Big Agnes, because it's only insulated on one side. It's designed to be used with a pad.

    Agreed!

I use quilts. I'm not sure I'll ever buy another sleeping bag. But, quilts aren't required. A sleeping bag will get the job done just fine.

At those temps, I'd carry my 3-season Yeti and my 3-season Black Mamba. That combo would give me plenty of extra in case the weather decided to mock the local TV weather personality. Seems to happen frequently.

At those temps, any 3-season bag and 3-season UQ would be fine while wearing nothing underneath, if you felt so inclined.
oldgringo's reply to my worrying about owning extra hammocks:

How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?

    WBBB dbl 1.7
    Speer Snugfit UQ
    Speer TopQuilt III
    MacCat Deluxe tarp

If it goes down to 20, I do the following:

Change out the MacCat tarp with a Speer Winter Tarp... This gets me down to about 0 degrees with some Capilene III pants and wool socks...

Haven't had it below that temp.... but if I do, I'll change out the SnugFit with the MW4...
