Tree bark damage?

There are four overmature aspen trees that are a hazard...

I plan on setting up a test on bark damage once the trees are not dormant. I would appreciate your thoughts on set up and what you want to know.

I'd like to see what visible damage only a Whoopie does compared to a 1/2", 1", and 2" strap. After, say, a one week weighted hang. Maybe take the most destructive one and see if it will actually kill one of the condemned trees. I very much doubt even the Whoopie will do enough damage to actually quickly kill the tree...faster than it will fall on your garage in the next wind storm anyway, that is.
