    So I bought One

Well folks, I finally made a decision and after some extensive research I decided on the Warbonnet Blackbird 1.0 DL. I ordered it on Monday. I hope it gets here by the 7th because I am going to make one last effort into the back-country before the snow falls. Although I may ditch the "big"plans and make it more of a car camping trip to learn the hammock system. That way if something happens I can just dive into the truck.

I haven't ordered a tarp yet, but I measured my 6x9 cuben tarp diagonally and it is right at 120 inches. It will be a weird pitch but it should work for now. Maybe by then I will have decided on a tarp. I am actually thinking about two different ones. For now I will purchase one that is a hex style because of the better weather protection. Then I will purchase a diamond tarp for the fair weather season.

I will use my WM Highlite bag and my GG 1/8 thinLight pad for the insulation between the two materials. Both of which are already part of my hiking kit. Although I have been wanting for some time now to buy a MB U.L. Super Spiral Down Hugger 3. I have had my eye on it for about 3 years or so. But again I will have to do some more bag research before I purchase another bag. I tried the quilt thing and didn't like it so that rules out that option.

As for the suspension I will just use what comes with the hammock for now and will explore options as I go along. I suck at tying knots and only know like 2 or 3 if that. So the simpler the better.

Well I think that's a good start. OK back to more reading...blast you guys. As if I didn't all ready have enough stuff to do.

Good luck with the new hammock. Car camping for the first outing is a good idea since allows you to be over prepared as you figure things out.

Don't rule out a top quilt just yet. To me they're just better suited for hammock than ground use.

    Have fun.

User your current bag like a top quilt for now. If you find that you never plan to use it as a bag again, consider modding it into a top quilt. I'm considering modding my Down Marmot never winter bag into a top quilt, and using the down that I remove from the bag for a down hat.

Nice purchas btw, you will be very happy.

    Nice purchase! You'll love it!

I use a MB bag as my top quilt, works great. You should consider getting an underquilt though, it'll make a big differnace in comfort with the WBBB.

    Good luck,

I just got a 1.0 DL last week too. I still use my MB bag in my hammocks. Someday I'll try a quilt. But till then my bag keeps me plenty warm.

Oh my I could never bring myself to cut up my Western Mountaineering bag Not to mention I have no skills and or motivation to sew/make something like that. I'll stick to building cars and leave the other things to other professionals

If you want to make your setup easier, pickup a pair of Dutch Clips!
