I am not suggesting any misleading anywhere. The OP was doing preliminary troubleshooting. Always start with the most likely fix and then move on. If the routine things don't resolve the problem then I recommend taking it to a mechanic. But first do the simplest thing which is to "rebbot" the machine if you will. Un-thread the entire machine, do a quick surface clean and re-thread. Frequently that will solve the problem. If not then you need to look deeper.Originally Posted by Silverlion

Bobbin Tension - A Personal Viewpoint
The first thing many sewing machine repairmen do as soon as you walk out the door is:
Change needle and rethread. - Its usually fixed.
They then will lube the machine and wipe it down.
They will check the timing by eye (sometimes a gauge). It's working, so the timing is usually correct.
The last thing is fill out the invoice for $80
Reminds me of my days as a motorcycle repairman. First thing we did was turn on the gas at the tank. Customer often said "what did you just do?" At that point you start filling out the invoice...
What is the proper way to thread the bobbin? My manual leaves out some crucial info such as 1. Which way should it come off the spool. and 2. How much thread should you have hanging out? I have a vertical bobbin by the way.
There is no universal answer for the threading question. Some machines have the thread come off the top of the bobbin some off the bottom. Some have the thread coming toward you, some away. You need to consult a threading diagram, a user with the same make AND model (even within brands it can be different.) or a mechanic. On the other hand... if it works and gives you no problems then keep doing it the same way and don't worry about.
The tail should be somewhere between long enough to be pulled up by the needle and short enough to keep from making a mess when you start to stitch. You get the picture?

I'm surprised this manual leaves those points out, everything else is very clear. Guess they figure you would be born with that knowledge, LOL. I've tried different approaches and eventually something works. Need to go visit the lady I bought this from, she gave me a real good lesson but of course at that time I didn't even know what a bobbin was, figured if I had trouble with it I just wouldn't use that...I think sewing is a lot like other pursuits, you get results after you have paid your dues! I do blacksmithing too, don't know how many failed forge welds I had and then one day they just started to stick.
I was having the same problem. Flipped the bobbin over and that fixed it.
