I'm not a "solo" hanger but as far as animals are concerned, I follow the same procedures. Never cook near my hammock, never have food at my hammock and hang all smellies (food, toothpaste ect) away from camp. Even though I'm hanging with other people, there's still bears, coyotes, raccoons, turkeys around me that I need to be aware of. I've never set up trip wires, shoot I'd proprobly be the one during the night to trip over the trip wire
I know I've had animals come into my camp, once I had a (I think) raccoon eat his dinner just about underneith me. He'd stolen the food from another camper near me that didn't secure the food but had left it out. Most of my camping trips are with scouts and believe me, I tell them and tell them to keep all food secure and not in their tents but they still do it. One night I had a (again I think) raccoon try to get inside a scouters tent. Scout slept through it but the tent had little holes and what looked like scratch marks on one side, the next morning. That scout learned real fast to get the food/snacks out of his tent.

Remember to hang your toiletries (toothpaste, deodorant) into the trees away from your camp as well, plus any clothes that might smell too much like food.

Where Thing1 and I will hang tonight, there are coyotes that like to get right underneath the camper that's there, when folks are inside. They growl menacingly when anyone tries to exit while they are there!
The owner has reminded us that it's open season on coyotes. So not only must we avoid widow makers, we also have to consider the firing lanes!
We'll probably walk a ways from the camper to find hanging trees.

It's quite possible that used as a preventive measure to "discourage" those campers who don't try to keep there food away from wildlife it could result in fewer bears actively seeking out human food. This in turn would likely make it easier for those of us who do follow proper food handling procedures to keep them out of our camps.How does that deter wildlife...aka bears from finding your camp?
