    Campsite Security

Do any of you solo hangers do anything for campsite security? I'm thinking bears, mountain lions, or even human predators. I'm in a rural area and don't really have anything around here but coyotes and I'm not worried about them. Do you folks in bear country set any trip wires/bells around camp before bed?

I do have a wolf rescue ( http://www.nighthowls7.com/ ) about 3.5 miles away and on the same road is another guy that has a few African lions!

Stealth camping ... straight and simple. If you're off the beaten path, muted colors and quiet with no fire ... no one will encounter you and the solo camping experience is just that ... solo! Then again it's good to have Walther along

I hang my food more than 100 feet from my hammock, but outside of that, I don't do anything.

How does that deter wildlife...aka bears from finding your camp? I mean let's be candid here, Yogi can smell a fart from 3 miles away...mmmmm, Mountain House beef lasagna, one of my all time favorites and oh, hey, is that apple fritter with a hint of hot chocolate? “JACK-POT!!!!”

What got me wondering about security is a show I was watching on Discovery Channel. A woman was attacked by a mountain lion while riding her bike. She was lucky to survive! Also, earlier today our local news ran a story on a bear sighting in our area. Over the last 20 years I've watched the wildlife population explode around here (coyotes, turkeys, bald eagles, etc.) so I know it won't be long until we start seeing bears and mountain lions.

I hike a lot in the Smokies that has a large bear population. Just common sense stuff like keep a very clean camp, hang all food and garbage at least 40 yards from camp, I try to do all my cooking away from camp and before it gets dark. Don't go to bed with snacks and hang all your soaps and toothpaste too. You can't do this all the time but I have had bears sniff around the camp and then leave when they can't find anything. Most of the time I wont see or hear them but the next morning the pile of scatt will show they were there.

I'm gonna agree with Hawk-eye and Cookie. Stealth camping is great to avoid interaction with other hikers/campers, but animals will find you no matter where you are. The best tip is to use simple common sense, as Cookie suggested. Don't cook where you're gonna sleep, keep a clean camp, hang your food/smellables away from camp, etc. I don't really think tripwires, booby traps, punji stakes, IED's, etc. are necessary, but to each their own.

If it is the same incident I know of, there was also a women mountain bike rider killed. Happened in '93/'94 in Southen California at Whiting Ranch Park. This wildreness park is hemmed in by housing developemts on 3 sides.
