    testing insultex uq

I have the hammock and tarp hanging in the yard. I tore apart and remade a 2 layer insultex uq. It is finally going to be cold enough to test it. It is forcast to be 43 tonight. It would be nice if it is comfy at that temp by itself. I have the pluq ready to add if it's not. The 2 together weigh just over 2 #. I think my pltq will be enough but I will have a fleece liner ready too. I will wear light pants and top and maybe take the vest of lite fleece. Prolly should have a hat too. I'll get back tomorrow to let you know how it went.

46'F and I was toasty warm until the @#$@ strap broke and dumped my butt on the ground. I didn't feel like fixing things in the dark so I came in. I was pleasantly surprised at how warm it was. Now, I had cut the insultex to 80 x 60 to make a 2 layer uq, by folding it in half, with a vapor barrier. It was not warm enough or I sweat too much from the vapor barrier before it got cool enough. I tore this all apart and made a new one without the vapor barrier. I first took the piece of insultex and sewed a half inch seam every 6 inches so it made a tube one inch in circumference every 5 inches. The tubes ran the 60 inch way. Now it was too small for 2, 40 x 60 pieces. I cut the 40x60 off and had 24x60. I centered the 24x60 on the 40x60 and sewed it on at the sides. This leaves me with 8 inches on each side that is only single layer ix. I sandwiched it between layers of nylon. One piece of nylon was 42" and the other was 38" with the ix being 40". I screwed up putting it together so had to sew an extra seam and lost an inch or so in width but it still works. I laid the pieces in the wrong order so when I sewed the sides together I couldn't turn the edges inside. It still works. I put shock cord on each end in a channel and attached a piece to hang it to the hammock. I am pleased with it. Now to get the topquilt done before it gets cold.
Has anyone cut a breathing hole in their topquilt?

Your strap broke? What kind of strap did you use?

What was the breaking strength of the webbing. Was the setup woopies or just a webbing suspension.

That's how I make mine... a drawstring closure at the foot end to allow you to ventilate it.

I meant a hole so that if you pull the quilt over your head you had a hole to breathe through. You could drawstring it to close it up. Mayb3e 4" diameter hole.

I finished the ixtq last night. It was 44, rainy, with a breeze. I had ixtq and pltq on top and ixuq and pluq on the bottom plus a thin layer of some kinda foam used to protect furnuture. It's about a sixteenth of an inch thick. I was toasty warm. I think this will be good to freezing.
