    Hanging tonight with my son

My son and I are hanging tonight in the woods behind our house...partly to test my new hammock sock (he gets the sock for the night), and partly because it's likely the last night he'll sleep out until the weather gets warm again...

They're predicting temps down into the lower 30s, with some chance of frost and snow for the morning, and my boy's really excited!

    We had an awesome time!

The new hammock sock exceeded my expectations, and allowed my son to spend a pleasant night outdoors down to a low of 28F!

At one point he actually said that he got hot, and unzipped his bag, but he may just have been showing off...I spent a great night in my HH and black MSS bag, with only a slightly chilled butt...

We heard and owl and coyotes singing on and off all night long, as they cruise up and down a nearby powerline that they use for a highway...

The high (and low) point of the night was being awoken at a bit before 1am by some branches crashing and heavy stamping and huffing on the path about 30 feet from our hammocks...my suspicion is that a bear was wandering by, and got surprised by our scent during a wind-shift...he/she spent the next few minutes stamping and huffing (while I did my imitation of an empty spot in mid-air)...eventually the bear went on down the path and away from us...a minute later I heard through the darkness, "Wow, that was cool Dad!", and then my 8yo son went back to sleep while I enjoyed the shakes for awhile...

We headed back home at 6:45am for coffee and cocoa, and to tell Mom and the dogs about our adventures...

It was a great night out!

Congrats on you and your son enjoying a close encounter with the "wooly" kind. Amazing how they can feel no fear during the night and we as parents are scared out of our minds!!!!!!!!. Glad you had a great time and may you have many more.

Awesome!! What a great adventure and I'm glad the bear (or whatever) hung around only long enough to make it fun for your son, but that's all.

It's magical to them, man! He'll never forget it. Good work!

That's what life is all about. Makin' memories that the kids will remember for the rest of their lives. My son (7) is always pumped when he hears the weather is going to be good during the weekend.
