hi I am kind of new to hammocks, i have just a basic set upt with a hammock and a tarp if it looks like it is going to rain. i have a bug net but only use it if i have to. i have notice people talking about a ridgeline on here and i was wondering what exactly is a ridgeline, its purpose, and how to make? or set one up

Yep, there is a ton on ridglines:
But in a nutshell, you can have a structural ridgline that connects around the ends of the hammock that will hold the hammock from stretching straight out and in turn creates a consistant sag. This is surprisingly an easy way to get a flatter lay.
or a non structural, that is used for holding a bugnet off you, storage, etc, but isn't used to create that sag.

what is the difference in using a ridgeline to create sag and just hanging your hammock looser? it seems like the same thing to me....other then maybe if you just hang it looser then you may be laying on the ground...please help
Yeah kind of that. Your alot more consistant with the sag with ridgeline vs finding the perfect distance with the trees, and or needing a ladder to get the straps high enough.what is the difference in using a ridgeline to create sag and just hanging your hammock looser? it seems like the same thing to me....other then maybe if you just hang it looser then you may be laying on the ground...please help

oh ok thanks for the help....i have the eno with two caribiners on the ends....could i just attach some sort of cord to each caribiner for my ridgeline?
That would work very good. Someone posted a picture for me about 2-3 weeks ago which showed exactly what you said. It make the concept and connection crystal clear. I am still looking for it. I will update the post if I find it...

The best part for me was this pic. It really cleared the air on how a ridgeline could be attached. Though I now have a slightly different arrangement than this, I would not have understood it with out reading this thread and seeing this. Thanks to Opie for the pic.
