I have amsteel on my 9000lb winch on my jeep. I snapped it once. I was doing a sideways pull so basically the fairlead cut it after the winch stalled I kept trying to make it go. There is virtually no stretch in this rope. I think it's like .03% or something like that. It did not recoil, basically it dropped to the the ground right where it was at. That was with a 9000lb winch and 3/8" amsteel.

Nope. It just drops to the ground! Great stuff!

When I first started to read about it, I checked out some YouTube vids. One was of the largest sized John Deere AWD tractor pulling on a big ol' bulldozer. The monster tractor started spinning and hopping, and it nearly ripped the weld off the eye on the dozer where the Amsteel winch line was hooked up.

Another video showed an Amsteel tow line snapping while trying to winch a stuck vehicle. It just suddenly went slack and dropped... no dangerous reaction at all.

    An amazing invention!

    Happy napping,

doesn't have the snap like a regular tow strap would but you should still hang a jacket loose over it or tie ribbons every so often to prevent from wiping if it breaks. that's kind of towing 101 in my opinion.

It's not necessary since there virtually is no stretch in it. Unlike a chain or steel cable which stretch. The stretch is stored energy when it snaps. Amsteel doesn't do that. Most professional off road events that use winches prohibit steel cable.

Funny story. This happened when spectra 60 just started getting small and getting popular for racing.

A guy was pulling a boat down to a race in FL. He (possibly) fell asleep and drove in to the median of I85 in Alabama and got stuck. Another person heading to the race saw him and stopped to help. The only line he had was some small spectra. He hooked the spectra to the trailer of the stuck vehicle and was going to pull him out backwards. About that time, an Alabama trooper pulled up. When he saw the small line, he tested both drivers for DUI. After passing the DUI test and a lot of arguing, he pulled the truck and trailer out of the median.
