Backup for the buddies

I've noticed that the majority of people I bring along backpacking that don't own a camping hammock are usually miserable. Ground too hard, ground too cold, that sort of thing. I own only one hammock, a HH for myself so I can't really help anyone out. I was wondering if this hammock (in the link) would be good enough all around for another person to use.

I doubt I would take someone winter camping since I only have a few friends with that kind of experience, but even so I think just a plain ripstop nylon hammock is better than a tent in the winter. Do you think?

Also, this is fairly cheap and my area has no cheap nylon fabric I could buy anyways.

Do you think this would be a good hammock to lend to someone for any season instead of them bringing a tent? Sure would be help with weight.

It would work fine IMO. You could get a SG 9x9 tarp to go with it. Pick up a couple of wally world 24" wide pads and they'll be set.

they are also selling the skeeter beater travel hammock for just $40 - for the extra $20 you get the netting that apparently ataches to one side by a zipper like the Claytor.

I have one of these that I use for winter camping instead of my HH which I use during the summer bug season. I have used it down to 24º with a Speer SPE with Wally World blue pad combined with a Thermarest. Slept snug as a bug in a rug. I since have since purchased a KA underquilt. I have only tested it to about 42º.

that hammock should be fine as long as you also provide them w/ proper insulation of some kind, be it ccf pads or under quilt.

I would think that they could use some of there ground gear with it to try it out and see if they like it before they bought one, Your a good friend to do that for your hiking buddies! I would asume your friends already have a ccf pad and a sleeping bag. they may already have a tarp too but the SG tarp would be a good addition to your guest hammock and a good backup for yours if needed, JMO

If bugs are any concern at all, I have been finding some awesome deals lately on the mosquito hammock made by travel hammock. They have been selling as low as 15.00. Zippered side entry, and it comes with a decent lightweight rope attachment system.

I think it is perfect for 'loaner gear'. Everyone should have an extra few hammocks on hand to be ready for new converts

The key to newbie comfort is going to be their under insulation. I can't remember who, but someone on these forums pointed out how much cheaper CCF pads can be if purchased through fabric and upholstery shops. I have found some great gems locally at just such a wholesale shop. Extra wide and sold by the foot. I also found some $1.00 stretchy velco straps, that keep several pads stacked together very nicely.
