    hello from california

I am new here and would dearly love to find a set-up I can use on long distance hikes. I try to be as light weight as possible but haven't been able to get the weight down of my hammock system to justify using it over long distances. I have the hennesy hammock system with their insulation package and it is fine for summer use but wouldn't work for shoulder season.
I recently purchased a Grand Trunk Nano and wonder if others have used it and/or developed a good insulation system using this hammock. Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum Shelly!

Everyone has an opinion and a way that works best for them, but the one that you'll find the most to read about , I think, is under-quilts. They are light, warm and can be vented for airflow if it's too warm. Spend some time in the "Bottom Insulation" forum and you'll get a lot of good info.

My daughter recently moved to Walnut Creek and I am interested in good places to hang when I come visit and would appreciate any ideas you may have.

Welcome to the forums Shelly. I'm up in Sonoma Country in Santa Rosa. My wife grew up in Santa Cruz and one of her sisters is in Watsonville. Follow UncleMJM's advice and you can't go wrong.

Welcome to the forums. Under quilts and top quilts are the ticket to keeping you warm in a hammock. Depending on the specific temp range that you are looking for. They can be had at a very small weight penalty. As already advised check around here on the forums and you will find a wealth of info on staying warm. Also check out Shug's video series "essentials for Noobs". He has some good cold weather tips.

I live north of Walnut Creek in Marin County and I can tell you that this area is, without a doubt, not the best for hammocks lol. The redwoods have massive trunks, and the oak trees are all pretty far apart. I find that if I want a really good hammocking area I have to head to Tahoe lol.

Don't get me wrong, you can find little places anywhere, but as far as large swaths of prime hammocking real estate, they are few and far between >.<
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I have not lived.

    Shelly:
Welcome to HF from Bama...........You may want to check out Sgt Rocks webpage concerning use of the GT Nano 7. He has done some experimenting with it in a lightweight set-up.

+1 on sgt rocks setup although an influx of cash will be needed. And welcome to the forum

Lincolnstrong, check out my albums about camping in the redwoods, you can do it. Granted I carry 20 foot straps to do it with but it can be done. There are a lot of places to camp here without going all the way up to Tahoe. Of course going to Tahoe is nice, take a kayak and go from Baldwin Beach to Emerald Bay. Done it twice now.
