Is there anything else you could buy, say at home depot, to use as a toggle?
I'd rather not spend $5 on something I could get for a little cheaper. haha

Or maybe some common sense item that's laying around the house?
    Pretty much anything metal?

    ....maybe i'm just cheap

I use those cheap key chain type biners then clip stuff to them.

+1 on the free/cheap keychain biners. I keep them clipped to my straps and I don't worry about losing my toggles.

I give a vote to arrowhead, just a bit cheaper than whoopiesling.com. They both sell the mostly the same things and you can't go wrong with either of them. http://arrowheadequipment.webs.com/

Don't use paracord for a tarp ridgline or tarp tie outs, it holds water and stretches. A cord that is light, doesn't stretch, and doesn't absorb water is best.

Your going to want 10+ ft to make a whoopie, so you might as well make them a little long and use your 15 ft pieces. Most people will tell you the 1/8" is overkill for a whoopie, 7/64" works just fine. Lots of guys are hanging on even thinner dynaglide. The 7/64" isn't hard to work with.

In my experience catfood can stoves outperform the pop can stoves. They cost less to make, they are a lot easier to make and they are more durable.

My opinion is to forget the marlin spike hitch. Why complicate things. My preference is to use dutch clips or carabiners.

You don't have to spend the money on fancy backpacking food though some of it is really good. Walk around your super market and look for things like instant, rice, couscous, instant potatoes, instant soaps. There is a lot of stuff you just add boiling water to, wait a few minutes and eat. Pouches of Tuna, Salmon, Chicken, Spam and bacon bits are popular for adding meat to your meals. Real eggs will last a week in 90 degree weather on the trail, they don't have to be refrigerated. Cheese will keep without refrigeration, some kinds better than others. With a little creativity you can make cheap, good, and easy backpacking meals almost as light as the high dollar ones.

You can spend any amount that you want on this activity. Get out and try it, find what works for you before you drop a load of cash. See if there is a local club near you or other people that you can go out with. Rent equipment if you need to. You'll be a lot happier once you've tried doing it than spending a bunch of money up front to find out you bought things you won't use again or you'll soon upgrade. If your serious about it spend the money on a good sleeping bag, a good backpack, and a good shelter. Don't skimp on those, everything else buy as you figure out what works for you.

I just bought some tree straps from arrowhead, 14 feet of webbing to make two 6 feet straps.
Pretty excited about those. My order of amsteel blue should be on my doorstep right about now to make the whoopie slings.
One for each end of the hammock, both 15ft.
I guess i'll figure out some makeshift toggle as I go along and I'll attach the whoopie slings to each end of the hammock through the channels.

I have a 50ft poly rope that I'll use for a ridgeline, It's pretty stretchy but it should do the job of holding up a basic multi-purpose tarp until I can get a better one.
I'll head over to home depot to get some mason line to use as guy lines and i'll use some old camping stakes to tie down the tarp.

    Sound decent?
Should I go ahead and use the mason line as the entire ridge line as well?
Is that the right way to set up a tarp, to just drape it over the ridgeline and tie it down with stakes?
Or should I line the tarp up diagonally and secure it to the tree through the corner ends using this diagram:

In terms of cheap/free toggles, one thing I saw mentioned in another thread was using a heavy duty plastic coat hanger and cutting it into pieces. I haven't tried it. For me, I've just been using the stick-found-on-the-ground trick. It's so simple I love it. Anywhere there are trees there will be sticks laying about.

I don't use stoves much anymore but I've been tempted to get the titanium vargo for some reason. I do carry Coghlan Fuel Tablets (like Esbit fuel) with me just in case. When I use them I usually just build a windscreen out of rocks and place the tablets in there but I did make a little stove out of a cat food can that I occasionally use. Don't laugh, it works.

What foods do you cook in it/take with you on a hike?
Depends, but I often take tuna packets, dehydrated, Ramen, Uncle Bens rice, etc...

    - What kind/Where did you get it?
    - How much?
I use a Petzl headlamp. I think I paid $40 or so. I had a few cheaper ones and they all failed me not long after I bought them for different reasons. I decided to pay more hoping for better quality and I still have the Petzl for a while now. I think I bought it at Cabelas.

Where do you get your ridgelines, more specifically for tarps?
The internet or a store somewhere?
    - Could I go to Home Depot?
    - What lengths/gauges?
I just use 7 strand Paracord right now. That can be found all over the web and on ebay.
