Lets discuss specific location and dates

OK, it sounds like everyone likes Oak Mountain. Anyone with other options is still welcome to speak up, but this may be central enough for us all.

The next questions are 1) Where at the state park do we hang out, and 2) What date do we go with?

Though I have passed through Oak Mountain numerous times, I have only once camped in the RV area, and I am not familiar with other camping options. I will defer to anyone more familiar than me to offer suggestions.

I have a very busy schedule the next 3 months, so don't feel obligated to set a date for my convenience (either I will make it or I won't). So what do you all think? My vote would be for Dec 10-12. Cold but not frigid. Thoughts?

As it stands, that weekend is open for me. I don't know too much about camping areas in the park either, but can ask around here and see what I find out.

Cuffs, you work just 2 miles from there. What can you offer about places to hang. Is there a decent group area? Are there more "remote" places we can access off the main road? I have only day hiked from the parking lot on top to the falls.

If there are people who would prefer not to hike in, we should consider a car site.

    a missing Cuffs

I think Cuffs has been overwhelmed at work lately. It looked as if she had been getting the Pelham store in shape since she was transferred there and given the manager's position. Maybe a pm might get her involved in this post.

This sounds like a good plan. December would be good, I imagine it would not be very crowded. I believe there's a tent area there as well.

I'll definitely plan to be there. Should be a few other hangers with me.

I'm definitely down with oak mountain. Live about 30 mins with traffic from there.

Would love to take this opportunity to learn some diy techniques from you ladies and gents and in general learn the ways of hammock camping.

Looking forward to meeting all of you.

    On my calendar....

They have several trails, suppose to have 52 miles worth...this website has some info, but it might be a bit dated http://www.alabamatrail.org/hikingAL/

I am fine with primitive camping and some day hikes also, not sure how the back country site look, but their website says there are three back country destinations available.

I really look forward to this meet/hang but the only problem I have with oak mountain is they do not allow CAMP FIRES AT ALL!!!!!!!! It is not a deal breaker but it is one of the things that makes a hang a hang.

No open fires kinda stinks, might be cool in December and a fire would be nice. Should we consider another local?

I leave it to the group...............I just wanted to point out one of the more fun points of a group hang. There is always Tannehill between B'ham and Tuscaloosa. Or there is always the trails around Mt. Cheaha......Maybe one of the LA Boys has a suggestion for the area in between B'ham and Montgomery..............Has it been decided if this is a hike/hang or a car camp hang??????
