I’m new to hanging and already find myself looking for those “2 perfect trees” as I’m driving. I grin when noticing all the newly available places to sleep that previously seemed impossible to sleep over. I’m 32 y/o and have been backpacking and ground-dwelling since my first backpacking trip in 6th grade with the school’s hiking & backpacking club. Thanks Mr. Evans! My first hammock experience was actually a few years ago. It was a $30 Byer Amazonas Moskito Hammock. I believe this was on the A.T. near Boiling Springs, PA. I was amazed at how comfortable my cheapo hammock felt. I even hung a rain fly from a tent over the hammock and foolishly thought I was all set. However, it did rain. At first, the light pitter-patter of the rain subdued me further and I felt even more comfortable…which didn’t last long. The rain really started coming down after a little while and I ended up shivering the whole night in my down sleeping bag which was wet from the pool of water that accumulated inside my hammock. I pretty much gave up on the hammock until borrowing a co-worker's Hennessy for a recent trip we and others took to New Hampshire. That turned out much better; even with rain I was comfortable & dry. I’m a true believer now and finally have my own hammock. Can’t wait to learn all the tricks of the trade from ya’ll.
