    Tying a Prusik "in hand"

Just another thing I hadn't run across yet in the couple hundred posts I've read on here. Before I learned this, I didn't think it was possible to Prusik both ends of a line onto other lines (or the same line) because once you've tied the first Prusik on one end, you can no longer pass the line through itself. However, I've attached a way to tie a Prusik "in hand" that allows you to make a Prusik in the line without having access to the other end. The pictures only show one wrap around the thumb and index finger, but you can take as many as you want to increase the gripping power of the knot.

Another way to do it is to have a small stick to tie the first Prusik to. Then, you can still pass the line through itself for the second Prusik and then transfer the first from the small stick to whatever it's supposed to go to.

Of course, you can't put the second Prusik on anything if you don't have access to it's end since you have to transfer the finished knot onto it.

    Cheers,
    Dan

I think that only works when the item your attaching the prusik onto has an open end...like your finger.

    Yes, exactly.

True, but isn't that the point? If you are attaching both ends of a line with Orusik (such as a SRL to whoopies on either side of your hammock) then after you attach the first Prusik, you can no longer pass the other end through, but instead need to lay the Prusik and pass it over the end of the line.

I had to do this with my SRL, and it worked fine. I did change it last night, but only for the ultimate purpose of better accommodating hooks on my UQ.

Good post DB2K. I like the way that is done with the fingers.

Hey. Another cool post Dan! I am not a knot expert, and wonder "who ever figured these things out!"

Wow! After reading this post, I just had to find me some rope at work and try it out (wasn't that tricky, I keep a little bit in my desk for just these types of emergencies). Talk about a quick and easy prusik! Timmy like!

    Nice post db2k!

There is another way of doing this by rolling a loop a few times and passing the other end, the bight, through. Difficult to explain. I'll try to do some pics when I get a chance.
