Just got back from Kansas City where I picked up a new to me Singer 404 for $40. Spent about an hour going over it and oiling it up, ran a few seams on some ripstop and it works great! Best part is the reverse, it lays a perfect line right on top of the other. Got a box of attachements, including a binder. Wonder if this will lay down grosgrain? Pics later, I'm too tired. Still want a Rocketeer though...

Binders come in all sizes... be sure it is a one inch binder.

Here's a pic. Much smaller and lighter than I envisioned. Seems to be a lot of parts and info floating around on these old Singers. Was able to download a pdf of the manual for free. Craig's List sure has a lot of machines on it. I found a lady in Belleville, IL who refurbishes old machines, she has 401s for around $200, lifetime warranty. So far no problems although it really needed some lube. I'm missing the knob that locks the stitch length if anyone sees one of these for sale.

What's your impression of the slant needle/foot arm? Better visibility? Any other advantages?
