    any footbox plans?

    Hey all!
I've been lurking here awhile, getting all kinds of great ideas. Thank you all for your contributions.
I've made my first gathered end hammock, so now I'm looking to step it up a little. I'd like to put a footbox in my next hammock. I've seen some pics where WBBB has a footbox addition sewn to the side of the hammock, but can't quite wrap my head around how it works.
Does anyone have suggestions about how to add a footbox to a gathered end hammock, or links to pics of such a thing?

I used to have a bookmark to some plans, but that link is now dead. Basically you form a right triangle and sew the two legs to the edge of the hammock (yep, sew right around the right angle.) I thinl on my last hammock the two legs of the were 30" each, leaving a hypotenuse of about 48". You hem the hypotenuse and the sew the other two sides to the side of the hammock about beginning about 6 inches from the end of the hammock.

Man...I thought I did search for footbox plans, but I must not have looked hard enough. Thanks Shug!

I guess I don't really understand the footbox idea....It seems the footbox should allow one's feet to rest lower in the hammock. With a side footbox, it doesn't appear that people's legs are any lower than in a typical (gathered end) hammock. They do appear to offer more coverage for the foot area.

Last night, I tried two different ways to add a footbox to the end of the hammock (as opposed to the side). I must say, it didn't turn out well... I'd post pics, but the hammock is ugly, and not worth sharing...
By the time I got to where I had a definite pocket to put my feet, the hammock started looking like a Bridge hammock....

So...it looks like I'll be going back to the tried-n-true gathered end for now (at least until I muster the courage to try a Bridge..).

thanks again for all your help

Try letting out your whipping on the foot end ....... it took me several tries to get mine where I wanted it.

Krugd explains it well. Just understand that the footbox doesn't affect the lay of the hammock. It just provides some wind protection for the feet and keeps your quilt or sleeping bag from faling out on a no-net hammock.

    this might help . . .

Seems to me like you'd need to let out some slack in that side/end of the hammock where the footbox is before you knot it or tie it up. Otherwise what's to keep that edge from being just as taught as the opposite side? Or would you make a cut out there that's less than the size of the triangle you want to put in?

"Just understand that the footbox doesn't affect the lay of the hammock."

I with I had known that before I started cutting up my hammock...
I may still try letting out some whipping...That's the nice thing about this hammock stuff- its so condusive to tinkering!
