    Yoho-Canadian Rockies

Every year one of my oldest friends and I try to get away for a week in the wilderness. This year was originally planned for the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, then changed to the Manistee River Trail in Michigan. Ultimately, the 48 hours preceding the trip took a drastic turn and put me in the Canadian Rockies. Thank God. We were extremely short on time, but the three days there convinced me this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. We took a quick hike around Moraine Lake on our way up to Takakkaw Falls and the Iceline Trail, spending two nights in Yoho National Park.

I hope you enjoy the pictures, and I encourage anyone to visit this part of the world. I took over 600 pictures of the Canadian Rockies alone, so more photos should follow. The photos don't convey what I actually remember witnessing with my own eyes--the light is very difficult to capture.

Trooper; glad things worked out for your trip to the Rockies. You took some great pics. The mildish weather continues . Thanks for the report. The Banff ,Yoho, Jasper,Kootenay Park areas get millions of people a year visiting and for good reason, it is stunning. I'm suppose to go to Calgary soon and was just checking out Takakwa a couple of days ago as an overnight.

The road to Takakkwa was supposed to be closed on October 1st, but because of the remarkable weather, it closes tomorrow. This makes the walk to the campsite several miles rather than 300 meters from the parking lot. If they keep the road open though, you can easily get to Laughing Falls and Duchesnay Lake, which are only about 4.5 kilometers out.

Even though the campsite is 300m from the parking lot, the park service has done a spectacular job of painting garbage dumpsters olive green and painting the structures a dark color so that everything blends in with the environment. The Warden had never heard of using a hammock to camp, and didn't worry too much after I explained the straps. Twin Falls campsite had a perfect spot for a dual hammock setup, but the overall feeling of the area was lacking. Trees are the minimal diameter in most of the campsites, but certainly viable.

I did get a copy of Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies, and it will come in handy for next year.
