True Story - I woke up in my brand new WBBB to find one of the white shock cords that holds the wings out almost completely chewed through in two places! It's literally hanging on by a thread, and I don't have anymore to replace it. I feel silly asking Brandon to sell me a single white shock cord so my WBBB looks new again.

Once had a large black dog wake me up by sticking his nose into the hammock right where my neck was - since we were in a bear area I jumped and started yelling - shortly followed with cussing when I realized it was just my friends dog

Twice I've been woke up by critters in the woods.

Once when I was a kid, with my older brother deer hunting. We were in his camper trailer and the trailer started rocking, fairly violently. First thing in our minds was bear, turned out to be a cow scratching its southend.

Next time I was at the lake. I had a pup tent set up next to the water, and had to rod out on what I thought were sufficient rod holders. I had a line tied to each and run around the front tent stake just in case. Sure enough, caught the biggest fish of my life, but just barely. He was running off with one of my poles, pulled the tent down and woke me up. By the time I got up and reacted he was working on pulling the other pole in.

27 lb. flathead catfish, lake Texoma, Oklahoma side.

That's not the most worrisome part of the story though. Next morning I found fresh big cat tracks not 20 yards from my tent. *shiver*

There are all kinds of critters one needs to be wary of. In parts of India and Southeast Asia monkeys could be a problem. And to crocodiles an occupied hammock means a gourmet treat.

I'm more worried about humans than animals.

Bow hunting season. A swaying coyote brown hammock looks a little too much like a twitching buck. That's all I need is an arrow between my ribs and a deflated lung when I'm trying to adjust my underquilt.

I've never had anything poke at me but back in July when my son and I were hanging overnight on a local island we were awoken by the ground moving. Odd sight, turned out to be hundreds of thousands of fiddler crabs migrating to the other side of the island. Made a heck of a ruckus in the pine straw. We weren't sleeping too well anyway in the 98 degree night air so it wasn't muchof an interuption.

I got two nice ones two, both happened in Namibia, southern Africa last year:

    1) following a wilderness bbq with friends and family decided to not climb into the jeep-with-tent-on-roof but rather overnight in hammock, thereby grossly neglecting locals' warning to beware of mean critters and such.
In the middle of the night some odd wind started with me just noticing only half awake that I was swinging wildly all the time. "Odd" i thought in my dream "a wind so strong to swing me about but absolutely no noise?"
Next day the puzzle was solved: All the remaining chicken and other bones of the bbq were neatly cracked and evenly distributed amongst our site. Also there were a lot of "dog paw prints" about, mainly where my hammock had been. I then figured that the dogs - who later turned out to have been hyenas - must have been passing under my hammock and right under my b... and so got me swinging! Good thing they hadn't been too hungry!

    2) Similar setup different location on same trip: Night was quiet and peaceful, only later recalled that a little smelly at times. In the morning got up rested as always, climbed out and stepped right into a fresh pile of elephant dung!

You might declare me the boaster of the century, but I swear both stories are true.
Menace? Thread? Maybe, but I prefer to call it nature. Fortunately these things still happen on our beautiful planet. If I wouldn't like that I might as well book into the Holiday Inn.
