    poly tarps?

ok NOOB ques: :besides the weight is there anything wrong with useing a $10 poly tarp from Wallys? as I have about 20 of these laying around. Granted under a majer wind storm they dont hold up (but I would never camp in that kind of wind again!) If weight is not an option and $ is, in other words what is the down side to using these tarps verses the fabric tarps?

    That was my first thought.

The tarps hold up in high winds if guyed properly
I have had good success in excess of 80km winds with these

i use one and have had little issue.

the only cons other than the weight and noise mentioned is getting it taught. I use a 8x10 on a diagonal so that may be the issue but for the time being it works fine especially given the pricepoint
    ...in it for pics.

I keep one rigged in my yard 24/7/365 in case I want to throw a hammock up and sleep in it for the night. They hold up well and I like the sound of the rain on them. You can't hear the rain very good in a SIL tarp.

I got one of the harbor freight camo ones, and it shredded the first night I hung it up. Started tearing right at the grommet and work it's way upwards.

I think those tarp holders would have helped prevent this.

Tried one in the backyard last week because I was trying to equip 6 persons with hammock set ups and was a tarp shy. In three days of breezy (gusts up to 15 mph) weather, the two grommets at the "ridgeline" started coming out. The small line in the edge did not give way. I had tarp holders but did not try them. Also couldn't get a terribly tight pitch.

But... not bad in a pinch. I say try it with 'tarp holders' and see. I used to have one in medium green that was silver inside that would have been nice for hammocking.

cool, thanks everyone. I just wanted a bigger tarp then the stock HH one, as far as noise I'm use that from tent camping & Riverpirate I like the sound of the rain too.
I have been in gust up to 60-65 mph and had them rip mostly at the corners but will try the tie outs.

If you're worried about the grommets tearing out, and you can't get your hands on any of the Tarp Holders or Grip Clips, take a small rock and cover it with the material at the corner of the tarp, then tie the tie-out lines to gather the rock in the poly film. It may not be pretty, but it'll last a LOT longer than those grommets will. The grommets are ok for tying the tarp over a static load or object, but if the tarp or load will be experiencing any type of movement the grommets are typically the first point of failure.

    Just my $0.02.
