    Whoopie Sling Modification?

So i started using Whoopie slings a while back for the convenience (and my love of fiddling with rope.)
    Loved them!

My only problem with them was that i was now carrying double the amsteel that i used to when just tying a "hennessey 8."

So after a while of missing only taking half the amsteel..... i ditched the Whoopies

I know, I know, you guys are all thinking "but amsteel takes up no room and weighs next to NOTHING!"

Aaaanyways i was back to tying knots again, and the next hang in a big storm started REALLY missing the quick and easy adjustability of Whoopies.

Got me thinking "why not just use the constrictor part of the whoopie and save doubling back on the adjustable loop?" of course you need both ends of the constrictor knot under load to "lock" the knot so i tied a small bowline attached to a prussik, attached to the main line. (after testing I found that you do have to crank hard on the prussik to lock off securely or it will slip)

If my math is correct, this system should save me carrying about 8ft of amsteel per 10ft whoopie sling!
Thats about 16ft less amsteel in total!

Those extra tabs in the pic are bowline ends I had to tie instead of burying the ends, as i needed as much hollow core as possible for the main bury to keep length down.
It does look a little more untidy than a Whoopie

So far have only spent an hour in the new system and it seemed to hold.
A long overdue overnighter will put it to the test

Any Feedback on improving or possible drawbacks of this system would be muchly appreciated.

Have you thought about how much more you could save with dynaglide?

Are most whoopies 10ft? That seems long. Whoopies are near bomb proof I'll carry the extra rope. at 1.36 grams a foot. So even with your math thats 22 grams, nearly an oz.

Wouldn't burying the tails take less rope than a bowline? In your picture the dead eye is pretty big, I bet you could shave some grams by making that a lot smaller.

I have thought about trying a ucr. I love my whoopies and dont anticipate replacing them. Just want to make some ucr's just to fiddle with. My whoopies are 12' and yes that is way excessive. Ill shorten them some day... maybe.

From what I can tell, this looks most similar to what miisterwright used in his thread "UCR + Taut line hitch"

I really like the idea of this setup for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, I know Giddyup mentioned weight, but I think it was more about saving the bulk and, more specifically, the tangle potential of carrying around double the length of line you need to meet your "maximum range". I have always been turned off of whoopies because of this inefficiency and their inflexibility.

Inflexible? Yep. I have seen it discussed here before. As far as I am concerned, I want to have the absolute maximum "range" of hanging options for the amount of line I am carrying. This does not just mean trees as far apart as possible, but also as close as possible. Using a WS bumps up my minimum hang distance by another 3 or more feet and this can be a pain when setup options are limited.

For the record, my setup is,

2 tree huggers with loops both ends.
1 aluminium tent peg cut down into 4 marlin spike toggles.
2 straight lengths of 7/64 amsteel each with a small loop on one end.

The amsteel is hitched over the hammock end using the fixed loop, then I am free to use one of the countless different options to secure my hang. Sometimes I use all the toggles, sometimes none. It just depends on the site and my mood.

I think whoopies are cool and simple - just not versatile and efficient.

This UCR system takes the user friendly nature of the whoopie, and makes it a little more efficient, which I like.

Thats it from me. Off to finish the sketches of my next major DIY build. A head and foot boxed, fixed under ridge line bug net, zipper entrance, HH whipped beauty without forgetting a new sil nylon tarp.

    All the best!

    Gareth.

Yeah i like long suspension lines. As one of the hanging greats always says, "better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it"
Ill have to check out dynglide also. Cheers
