    Bad Weather Coming

Over the past couple of years I have been VERY lucky in the weather department. Not so for tommorow night! I'm going to do some stealth kayak camping on a local lake and the weather is calling for heavy rain and high winds (15 w/gusts up to 30) for the over night and into the AM. My worries are how well will my MacCat standard (pitched as low as poss.) protect my down UQ? The island I will be on will offer some protection....but?

    KMACK:
If you have a poncho, not the plastic kind, in your kit rig it under the down UQ to act as a weather barrier. It would not have to be tight to the uq to keep most of the moisture off it and it would act as a wind barrier as well.

yah- think taco shell...or set up behind the trees from the wind, and with the edges pulled tight to the ground you should be all right.

(mind you, my first thought was 'bad weather coming? tarp test time!')

It will be a fun night ..... you may be dry as a bone under there. Best way to find out is to go through it. Be prepared to improvise! A good pitch is your best bet though.

I'm kayaking out Friday to do some camping on one of the islands on Lake Champlain, and it looks like wet weather...I'm bringing the big tarp!

The poncho idea just might be the ticket. Thanks all!

Don't forget to check REALLY well for widow makers! Look out pretty far from camp for trees that could fall your way, not just directly above you.

Totally agree with z96cobra. We want you safe.
I carry a poncho for that exact reason, but I found I stayed dry last weekend despite serious rain and wind w/out it, so you may not need it. Good to have a "plan B," though, just in case.

Stay dry and warm! Happy hangin'. Post some pics if you get a chance.
