    Dumb question

Hey all, I'm new to hammocks and I was wondering, what is preventing a bear or a moose or similar animal from treating me like a swinging buffet? (Yeah, I know moose don't eat people but I hear they get horny and I don't want to be confused for a sex swing either )

    Thanks!

The same thing that prevents them from making you a Pu-Pu-Platter in a tent.

Yeah, I guess that's true but it seems like I could get a shot off easier with my pistol if I had a barrier between me, albeit a thin one.

Your tarp is just as much a barrier as the tent wall. Bears run away just as fast when they hear you cough on the inside of the tarp, trust me.

My guess would be they find humans less than tasty. They will eat you, but only if their usual fare becomes scarce.

tents... the greatest source of a false sense of security ever invented...
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I have not lived.

Hey, I thought that was governance?

Basically, there's nothing to stop you from being killed by a bear. Apart from one eye open and a .45.
You could make a trip wire bell ring system to alert you. But that could prove problematic for when nature calls, or when it's windy.

How many times have you seen bears on the trail? If it's a severe problem, pitch your hammock where they're less common.

At least you can see what's coming and get away without having to cut a hole in the side of your tent.
