    Snow?!

You are right that any flat tarp is not going to work in heavy snow fall. The simple solution is to pitch the tarps down in the center; in other words, pitch your tarps just as you would normally.

If everyone had triangle tarps, you could use a tall pole in the center to create a pyramid tarp. I suppose if each were customized with Omni tape on the edges you could seal up the peak. I suppose that might be a customized tarp: triangle with Omni tape on inner side and hex on outer side.

This stand looks like a good test for the Ogee Tarp and its multi-pitch options..........

Those are the two solutions I've come up with. The first is impractical; it would douse the fire in the middle.

A Huge Ogee might be just the ticket!

dejoha: Thanks for the vid. If you made one of the pole shorter that would pitch the tarp plane and maybe that would get the rain to run off.

...or put it on uneven ground.

I was having trouble envisioning the relationship between the spar length vs. vertical height for the desired 60deg angle so I did a graphic.

    WOW, I'm sold

This is such a simple, cheap and easy to erect design, we're going to go with it.
I had been working on a tensegrity stand yet due to time constraints had to quickly come up with 2 post stands for a scout camp. Thanks to you, we're back in business with 1 more hammock for the same money put out.

This looks awesome! But, I need help understanding it. I wish I had a CAD program to help me with my drawings!

Corresponding colors match up vertical height on the left side to spar length on the right side.

Yes! This stand also provides more room in the middle than the hourglass design I'm building on the other thread. We had a small square fold-up table in the middle of this new stand -- it fit perfectly.

I'll have to do some fiddling with some tarp designs. I bet with a large cheap tarp you could drape it over the entire top triangle and use a pole to push up the center a bit. The other major problem with a fire in the middle would be the smoke. You would need to build a window or a chimney to allow the smoke to escape or you could have more problems. The Native Americans solved this with their Tipi designs, but it would wreak havoc on nylon.

A stove is probably a better alternative, and one I think you mentioned in your video. Getting a chimney rigged is another challenge, but a necessary one to combat to avoid smoke inhalation and other problems. BUT, then you also have the problem of a hole in your tarp where snow might come in.
