    tarp mod poles

I really like the UGQ winter tarp with the double pole mod, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something. You can purchase the tarp with the mod (no poles) for an extra $20. Can you just use tent poles for this type of mod, they are fairly cheap on Amazon or is there something I'm missing. I'm new to all this and trying to learn, so appreciate any advice. Seems like a simple DIY if you have the tarp pre built for this.

yup, you can use tent poles you have kicking around np (as long as they're the right length)

the expense comes in when you need/want a specific length, and a specific weight

Carbon fiber poles are roughly twice the price, but half the weight of aluminum. "You pays you money and you takes you choice." Or maybe its the reverse, like everything else it comes down to choices.

I'll be using it at BSA camp outs, so not really hiking where weight would be an issue. I guess the weight would only cause an issue if it starts pulling the tarp down, hopefully tent poles won't do that.

I bought a set of poles to discover they are too long for my Hennessy Hex but too short for my WB Superfly or Eno Housefly. So I ordered a second set. The pole tip pulls out and the elastic cord is just tied through a loop. It is easy to take 1 or 2 sections from one set and to add them to the other. This will means a short set for the Hex and a longer set for my tarps with doors.

Pretty easy project. I bought a set of two 13' Easton .344 poles from a clearance site...Pretty cheap.

I modified one pole to 109" for use with the 2QZQ mod on my MamaJamba and the second pole was split into two shorter poles for over the RL or when I want/need to go UL and use only one pole.

Using a pole totally changes the level of comfort under a tarp, especially when it's windy.

Sent from somewhere east of Montauk...
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Thanks guys, that's what I was thinking, it should be easy to remove a section or 2 to get them to the length I need, most poles are connected with an elastic string.

I saw the Easton poles after ordering aluminum... boo! Much easier project with instant gratification. No experience required, just common sense (like don't let go of the elastic!).

Yup, I'll clamp the elastic before I cut it then knot them off.
