    Thinsulate

    My local store has Thinsulate
but they don't know anything about it.

    It lofts to about 3/16"
(feel funny calling it a loft at that thinness)

Any Idea what it is, or how much insulation it would provide,

or how many layers to do anything for winter camping ???

I used that in a DIY UQ. With a single layer, I find it's only good down to about 45 degrees. Below that and you wake up cold.

    Here's a picture of it.

Do you think 2 layers would be good for 32°F ???

Thinsulate comes in 40, 70, 100 and 150 weights. At 3/16 it is probably toward the lower end. As far as how many layers, I can't help you with that.

At 3/8 thick, that may be Thinsulate 40 or 100. I'd be guessing at how many layers you would need.

This may help. I used Thinsulate 150. Two layers of 150 would probably be good down to 32, but it's going to be bulky. I'd probably look at Climashield which is puffier, yet more compressible like down for winter quilts. I almost went with that and now wish I had. I may be making another quilt with it this winter.

Here's a link to information about Thinsulate and the different thicknesses and uses.

Here's a link to Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics that has additional information about all kinds of insulation. They are a great place to buy supplies too.

I've used Thinsulate in a quilt before now but be advised, it does not compress well. For the bulk and weight you can get much better performance from other materials.
