This insulation, does it go inside the hammock or do you just sleep on it?

Hey Swingus! How averse are you to making some of your own gear? With minimal effort you can crank out a do-it-yourself gathered end hammock for very little out of pocket. It's a nice, inexpensive way to start hanging (and also customizable).
I'm usually very averse to DIY but you have my curiosity up.

If you are using a pad for insulation, you can just lay right down on it.

If you think a DIY setup might be for you, check out PapaSmurf's thread on a beginner Boy Scout set up. Lots of useful info for anybody that wants to test the waters without throwing too much cash into it. And, of course, you can alter various parts of the setup to suit your needs, or to use what you happen to have on hand.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

    Cool, thanks!!!!

Do you guys do anything to keep your hammock from getting stolen when you're off the camp site or is that genuinely not a problem? I'd hate to pour some major $ or time into a set-up to have some punk kid steal it when I go to piddle.

Same thing you would do with a tent, pretty much nothing... With a blue tarp, a $5 walmart pad, and a $20 hammock I wouldn't worry about it to much.

If you camp off trail (where its allowed) your much less likely for anyone to even find your stuff much less mess with it.

Just don't make it so inviting that everyone that sees it, wants to lay in it . If you do you will have a group hang on your hands!

    Oh right, that makes sense.

So what you're saying is that I probably shouldn't bring my giant neon sign that says "Gherry's hammock" to my campsite.
