    Hello From Franklin, KY

Wanted to say hey and say how thankful I am to have found this forum. I ordered a Blackbird last week to try and lighten and stream-line my hiking set up.

I had been hiking in Mammoth Cave National Park alot over the past month and got the itch to try some overnight excursions without dealing with a tent. A hammock seemed like the best approach to remain mobile, agile, and hostile.

Plans are to test the set-up out a few times in the park this fall and then prepare for some longer backcountry trips in TN and in Land Between the Lakes after duck season goes out at the end of January.

Looking forward to using the resources here to iron out as many kinks in my execution before things get really really real on the trail.

Welcome to HF from Bama..................I recommend the 10 part video series for Hammock Noobs that the Pied Piper of Hammocks (Shug) put together. It is very informative and entertaining at the same time. Good luck with your hammock knowledge and glad you decided to hang out with us!!!!!!

Try to make it out to the Red River Gorge hang the weekend after Thanksgiving! There's a thread floating around here somewhere about it.
oldgringo's reply to my worrying about owning extra hammocks:

How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?

Welcome fellow Kentuckian. What trails have you been hitting at Mammoth Cave? Id like to get back down there and Collie Ridge again.

That would be the opening weekend of duck season. I am spoken for.

I have hiked White Oak, First Creek, and did a loop with my wife consisting of Buffalo, Turnhole Bend, and Good Springs in the last three weeks.

The plan is to start a bit more exploring on the south side of the park (few trails) when I am able to stealth camp a bit better.

    Welcome to the forums!

I grew up in Bowling Green, and my first backpacking trip was on the Collie Ridge Trail at Mammoth Cave 28 years ago. There are some excellent places to stretch the legs, though the sheer volume of horse packers in the Mammoth Cave area has reduced that somewhat. As the weather gets colder, the horse riders will become fewer and the trails will become nicer.

The North-South Trail at Land Between the Lakes is a fantastic place to break into long-distance hiking. 62 miles of nearly all level ground and decent water sources in multiple areas make it a great place for a long, relatively easy walk.

While you're at it, a 2 1/2 hours drive will take you to Savage Gulf State Natural area near Gruetli Laager, TN (a bit northeast of Monteagle, TN). It is, IMO, the best hiking outside of the Appalachians in the Southeast. Be sure to check it out.

While you're at it, next weekend (29-31 October) consider the 2+ hours drive down the Natchez Trace to Meriwether Lewis National Monument for Neo's Middle Tennessee Hang. You could make it a day trip for just Saturday. It would be a great opportunity to meet many other hangers and see different rigs for tarps, underquilts, pads and extenders, and so forth. Your learning curve would extend greatly with some hands on time with the many techniques and items that are mostly just found online nowadays.

Welcome, Smashdn, and Howdy, neighbor. I live just north of Russellville, KY. I also recommend Neo's hang at Merriwether-Lewis. Although I won't make it this year, those folks are very patient to share their knowledge. It is a comfortable campsite to hang lots of hammocks. You won't leave hungry, either!
