    Rain, tarps, and gear

Not completely sure this is the best place to post this, so I apologize if it's the wrong forum. I'm pretty certain I'll be purchasing my first hammock this winter, and I'll be primarily using it for trips paddling through the boundary waters which is notorious for having a rather diverse range of weather. I'm concerned about my packs and gear that will go on the ground under the tarp. I know that I can lash it tight to the ground, but have you guys found that the water intrudes to any degree inside the tarps, and what do you do to lessen it's effects. Thanks, Strom

Why not make a gear hammock?

or (also from JustJeff's site) make a kid-sized hammock for your gear...

There are lots of options ranging from the cheap to expensive.

The first option is good site selection so that water won't pool under your tarp and hammock and then you can leave your gear under your hammock and you should be good to go.

Next option is to use your dry bags/packcovers/garbage bags for your gear that you put in your canoe, since you are paddling it is no extra weight and you have them on hand already.

A more backpacking related items is to get the Molly Mack Gear Gear Box. It is a small silnylon hammock with a cover. Hang it on it's own or under you existing tarp, beside/under your hammock. Keeps everything dry and off the ground.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers
