Noob question:
Is it recommended or necessary to back up the whoopie sling grip by a slippery half hitch? Or are whoopies pretty much slip free when tensioned?

They are slip free when tensioned. I would be more concerned about having something like a knot on the back side of the sleave that would keep the sleave from fully extending and reaching full grip.
No need for an additional hitch with a whoopie. Just make sure you milk the bury before loading it to help the outer line grip the inner.
