    its all about the fabric

Just finished my DIY hammock, bugnet, tarp and now it is time to show it off.

First of all I need to thank my mother, I could not have made the awesome tarp without her amazing needle skills.

Second, its all about the fabric.... my friend and I were hanging out in an abandoned lot across the street from another friends house close to the Biloxi Bay... anyway... I have a camo hammock with green bugnet, he did not have a bugnet and has a blue GT ultralite hammock... as our friends were approaching, they could clearly see my friends blue GT and did not realize I was also hanging out right next to him... thus the importance of concealment for choosing a fabric for your gear

Many threads on HF concerning the which fabric is the best/lightest/warmest... I am here to say that the fabric pattern also needs to be considered

I ordered the snakeskin fabric from ebay with the intention of making "snakeskins" from snakeskin fabric... but then decided that it looked better as a tarp... still deciding if it was the right decision (my friend is jealous...so i guess I am OK with it)

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Snakeskin-Nylon-...#ht_1556wt_905

Still need to test the concealment capabilities of the tarp...will post results.

What do you think about my set-up???

Also...do "snakeskins" need to be waterproof??? silnylon vs. nylon??

FYI...just finished poncho no-sew UQ and TQ from left over camo/fleece fabric

That is a slick looking tarp!
I loathe snakeskin boots, but that thing right there is a beauty. Very impressive.

NICE! It's cool using gear you made yourself ain't it? Is that a snakeskin gear hammock I see as well?

Great looking stuff you have there. I made a bridge hammock for my daughter out of that snakeskin fabric. I would test the tarp with a water hose. You may need to add some kind of silicone spray etc to help it resist rain. Might want to check out the thread about making material waterproof by soaking in some silicone and mineral spirits.

    Welcome to the diy addiction!

    That tarp is SICK!

    But I bet it's heavy!

I'm with you on the fabric...I'm not happy (or too picky as everyones telling me) with what I find (that I can afford).

I'm betting that snakeskin makes for killer winter stealth!

That looks great! I hope I catch (learn) the ways of DIY this winter.

I need to make my winter set up.
