"A womans place is on the trail"
My group did Brick Hill camp about a month ago. Temps and weather then were great too. My hiking partner and I decided to take the scenic route headed back to the dock. A line on a topo map does not a trail make. During the bushwhack we got eaten by chiggers/ticks. Even with the bugs the island was incredible. I'm trying to talk some of my coworkers into heading there this weekend.
I can't imagine bushwhacking there with the saw-like palmettos. Glad you had fun regardless. We had soaked clothing with permethrin beforehand, and that helped keep some of the bugs off. The noseeums were bad in spots. Bug sprays are a necessity, and bugnetting too.

Great report! We go there every year in January - little to no bugs, and not too many people on the island at all. We should be there again this January, and hope to hike up to the North end of the Island again. A few years ago we camped at Brickhill Bluff and were awaken at dawn by the sound of dolphins breeching and feeding right by the banks of the river. With no insect noise (it was 28 that morning), it sounded like they were right in the hammock with me!
It is the one of the most unique places in the US.

Looks like a good times! Your kids will probably look back to this trip with pleasant memories many years from now.
I always wanted to visit Cumberland Island since reading the book "Encounters With the Archdruid" by John McPhee.
I have heard some small bits about the book, and saw firsthand some of the unfinished development that had been started. I have to say it is extraordinary to stand on 17 miles of natural state, undeveloped beachfront property in this day and age. So happy I was able to experience that.

Nice place to hang at it seems. I need to put this one on my list.
From the sounds & looks of it, now's the time of year to get out there.
Thanks for sharing the trip.
