Ahhh, we just got back last night from a long weekend trip to Cumberland Island, Georgia, about 7 hours away. We had a great time. Got to St. Mary's, Ga. on Thursday night and stayed in a hotel, then caught the early Ferry to the island. I took my youngest 2 daughters and we camped with my Aunt and Uncle and cousins and friends in one of the Sea Camp Group sites.
I listened very carefully to the volunteer giving our camp orientation talk (required), who stated that if you did attach anything to the trees, to make sure you took it with you, and not to attach it with any screws or nails. Roger that!
By the time we arrived at the camp, the others had already gotten tents set up between the best hammocking trees, so we let them set up camp and took off exploring. When we got back we took what was left and made the most of it. I was actually off the site back in the woods a bit (in the palmettos). The kids were spread through camp.
We had a great time exploring, and playing on the beach, and hiking out to search for shark's teeth in the dredgings, and visiting the ruins of Dungeness. The kids also loved climbing and playing in the live oaks near the beach. Generations of kids have climbed and played in those same trees.
If you ever go, keep in mind that the rental bikes at times are little more than junk, and they don't have kids bikes, I was told, because of liability issues. You take your chances with the bikes. 'Nuff said. We made it work, but it took some hard work. Did I mention that they were mostly junk? I think I did. Didn't I?
Things we saw:
We saw a submarine being escorted into the sub base nearby, dolphins, wild horses, turkeys, raccoons, armadillos, large spiders (harmless kind), red-headed woodpeckers, ghost crabs, various herons and buzzards and other types of birds, and on and on...
We saw miles of undeveloped and empty beach, the full moon reflecting on the water, the spanish moss in the live oaks, the palmettos everywhere. The weather was clear, days in the mid 80's F and cool but never cold nights. Couldn't ask for better weather.
At night the raccoons and armadillos would come into camp, so putting food away was top priority. I had two nights where some critter came up to where I was sleeping, only to get spooked by my hammock and skedaddle from right underneath me, which scared the bejezus out of both of us...
The girls slept well in the hammocks, except for AG, who slept in my Aunt and Uncle's tent after they read everyone ghost stories right before bed that last night. We got a short light rain shower the night before we left, which left splattered ash/sand/dirt on most things. Good thing I wasn't on the ground!
I'm having a bit of a difficult time with re-entry today, since we just got back last night and I'm back at work this morning...
Pics are posted here. Enjoy!
If you ever get a chance to visit here, I highly recommend it. (but I wouldn't recommend it during the summertime -- too hot)
