The Perfect Tarp?

I went backpacking with a bud from BGT this spring and was converted from the darkside. To see if I liked hanging I picked up a HH Expidition (Zip) from REI on the cheap. I loved it and bought a demo HH Deep Jungle (Zip) from Hennessy on sale just a few weeks ago.

That's when I found the forum, and I've already converted to whoopie slings. The thing is I don't like the diamond fly, and the HH silnylon hex is pretty heavy. So, I'm looking for suggestions on a tarp.

I didn't even know about the WBBB when I ordered the DJ, but his tarps look pretty nice, as do those made by OES. I'm sure most would tell me if $$$ were no object Spinn would be the choice over Silnylon.

Anyhoo, thanks in advance for the advice and as they say in Alexandria, TN; "this site is ALSUME..."

Check out the "Ogee" tarp, made by Gargoyle at GargoyleGear.. Just PM him, check out the video section (Look up to the Left on your Screen), or check out HawkEye's video's..

If you try an Ogee tarp...you won't be sorry!

I'll second that... I just received mine today and it looks sweet! I haven't set it up yet, but I predict it will perform as advertised...

Welcome to the forum ftroop. Your definitely looking in the right places, and spinn is certainly your best bet on going light, however I can understand it not fitting into you budget as it does not fit into mine either (as much as I wish it did).

And you are gonna wuv the price...especially for how much you get and the many ways that it can be used.

Don't forget that it is light weight and with all of it's setup options it can be used for a ground dweller real easily (I, myself have used it when ground dwelling with others...just don't tell any of the other HF tribal members).

You can definetely fit more than one under it, and it makes for a great dining/work area tarp.

You are going to get a lot of opinions on what the best tarp is. Best thing to do is to get an understanding as to what kind of coverage, color and weight you are looking to achieve. That will narrow down the choices to choose from.

I don't think that there is a perfect tarp. Only a perfect tarp to match a set of conditions. For instance, Hennesey's original "napkin" of a tarp is lightweight but, it probably wouldn't please Shug on a January hang in Minnesota. Cuben is lightweight but you pay dearly for that. Then there are personal preferences - some people wouldn't carry any item that wasn't digital mossy breakup oak, or whatever that's called, even though it weighs 10 oz per square yard (obviously, I'm not one of the latter).

Therefore, we all end up with multiple tarps.

There are tons of great tarp options, and I second what Raul said about deciding what coverage, weight, and even color you want. That will help a lot with narrowing it down, as will price.

For me, one of the big draws for the Warbonnet tarps is the available doors, makes it easy to use the same tarp for multiple seasons. There's options like the Grizz Beaks from 2QZQ for other tarps (including the OES ones) as well, I just happened to like the doors. For my first tarp, I went with the Edge in Spinn because it's nice and light, offers decent coverage, and most importantly, I got it for a good price used through the forum
