25 to 30 degree hang angle...

I was playing around last night with angles and also looking to sus out the ideal diagonal lie. I came to the conclusion that these two seemingly FAQ’a are linked very closely.

Is that like a “Yeah deeeer” statement?

I had been tying the hammock almost straight / taught between points as this is what I needed to do so I was not sitting on the ground when getting in it….. (Light bulb moment) and that was because I was tying at chest height.

So up the arms went to tie off a little over head height. And enough sag to get the hammock at butt height….. Jumped in and had the best diagonal lie yet.

Anyhow – just thought I’d share my little epiphany

I love the charts and pictures, really caused me to understand better what a 30 degree hang was all about. Out in the real world it's a bit harder. The ground slopes, the trees lean, the trees aren't where I want them, there're other trees around and in places I would rather have cleared... You do the best you can with what you've got!!! At least I know the ideal that I'm aiming for.

Curious how long everyone's suspension is. I made my whoopies from the nice post here which calls for a 14 foot starting length. My tree straps from Arrowhead are 6 foot long each. THat seems to be way long so I have to find trees pretty far apart. Thinking I will make some straps that are much shorter and I might even put multiple attachment points on them like the ENO ones (only minus the stretch!). Had to go too short on the whoopies because I'll lose adjustability. Does anyone carry multiple suspension in different lengths?

I think there are a lot of people that do. For me, the idea starts with researching where I am going and what conditions i may expect. I have short 3' webbing and slings at the short end.

4' whoopies are long enough for me (9' start lenght of cord)

Are you using a marlin spike hitch with toggle in your tree straps? If the trees that you typically hang from are small in diameter, try wrapping the tree strap around a couple more times to shorten them up.

I generally use 6' whoopies but also carry a pair of 6' amsteel extenders that have an eye spliced at each end. Find those are frequently needed.

I am talking to myself as much as anybody here--interested in hammocks for about three~four months and still having questions about the angle of the dangle, as it were. Those of you who've been here awhile know this like the back of your hands, but we newbies should have this firmly in mind. The Three Paces Rule, the Magic Thirty Degree Rule, and the function of the ridgeline in the context of these two precepts. I have six foot straps and eight foot whoopies. I have had occasion to bless and curse them.... sometimes the straps are too short.
